That unforgettable scenery could be without hesitations among the most beautiful postcards of the  Côte d´Azur or a sensational spot for every tourist promotion for the radiant appeal which transmits at first sight.

Tthe stunning Principality of Monaco ruled by the House of Grimaldi is situated at just 3,0 kilometres away and to reach that small but popular State is enough to take Avenue Boulevard Charles III, that long axis northern to the Port de Fontvieille and the famous Montecarlo Heliport continuing along the notorious Avenue du Trois Septembre.

Along that route in than 10 minutes driving you will reach that famed sovereign  city state which arose in the Middle Ages when in 1297 Francesco Grimaldi, a Genoese, Guelph leader occupied that land establishing the stronghold of the descendants of Grimaldo Canella, former, iconic consul of the Maritime Republic of Genoa in the 12th century.

When you see at distance the promontory of Cap-d´Ail it vaguely seems a foot which wants to come gently into the water, the view is simply superb anytime, during a sunny day, at evening or night with artificial lights admiring the several stylish villas and elegant houses perched on the surrounding picturesque hills.

Those images represent a sort of hymn of the magic beauty of the Mediterranean and also that is a secret of the French Riviera because every corner of its territory shows a wonderful  face extremely fascinating in every season.

In spring that resort spreads in all its beauty  a festival of wonderful colours due to the blossom of numerous species of flowers while summer is a stunning poetry dedicated  to the sunny life created by mother nature highlighting that stretch by intense sun rays falling on magnificent blue waters and shaped cliffs generating at sunset with unforgettable reflections idyllic images to remember forever.

From there in a while you can reach Avenue du Port with the striking view from the splendid waterfront bewitching bay in an environment so silent, calm, extremely inspiring constantly transmitting that there is something of magic in the air.

(I wrote posts about those places in the case you are interested)

That striking coastline certainly has a good number of Top class resorts but also small centres very attractive, extremely fascinating and it is also for that magnificent combination that divine, Mediterranean stretch is so seductive.

The incredible number of places you can discover day by day during a stay with shining gems less known than those acclaimed Queens of the French Tourism but equally stunning as Cap-d´Ail.

The town historically has always lived in the shade of the prestigious Principality of Monaco so close and glitzy but that seaside is a great place, definitely less shining of that renowned microstate but as that noble adjacent site it is absolutely unforgettable in its kind.

It is not a case that it was loved by Sir Winston Churchill, who visited several times that resort which gave the famous British politician the honorary citizenship but also receiving as usual guests many other prominent figures such as the artist Jean Cocteau, the famous Swedish actress Greta Garbo, Russian Tsars, Princes of Wales, Lord Beaverbrook and Sacha Guitry among others.

For long periods among its popular visitors there was also André Malraux, a famous Parisian writer, journalist but also soldier when he fought as volunteer in the Spanish Civil War enlisted later during the Second World War in the French army, politician as minister during the De Gaulle government and friend of Trotsky.

Apart all those famed characters Cap-d´Ail was also residence of the inventors of the Cinema the legendary Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas and Louis Jean Lumière born in Besançon and resident in Lyon.

After a Film exhibition which took place in Nice in 1896, they totally fell in love with the charm of the Côte D´Azur convincing their father Antoine to build a beautiful mansion in 1902 which was called Villa Perle Blanche, the White Pearl Villa you can see in Cap-d' Ail nowadays.

Also in more recent times that resort was able to enchant with its fascinating appeal other renowned figures, it is enough to mention a present resident, the former footballer Didier Deschamps who played for important Clubs such as Olympique de Marseille, Juventus Chelsea, winning as player the 1998 World Cup which took place in France and currently coach of the French National Team.

All those personalities of high ranking were simply bewitched by the immense beauty of that site and it is not a coincidence or a mystery that Cap-d´Ail is something of extremely special, for someone it is including astonishing for those tonalities of colours with spectacular combinations such as sea- cliffs, vegetation-hills, images simply unique to immortalise in a giant wallpaper or poster.

The name Cap-d´Ail according to historic documentations derives from the name Cape des Abeilles, which translation means Cape of the Bees, a denomination probably  linked to the first Celtic inhabitants, the Ligurians who settled in that land many centuries ago.

That ancient population as pagan and polytheist believed in different divinities among them that fying insect and today in the Coat of Arms of the town around a crenellated tower there are three bees representing all together the municipal symbol.

There is also a legend which links those element linked to a remote narration saying that such towering building was elevated for beekeepers and not for defencive purposes but that is simply a supposition.

Despite that there are other versions and debates about that name as one related to the construction of an Italian tower called Torre D´Abeglio which gave the denomination to the the town.

A further one is closely related to the House of Savoy,  that Royal family which ruled Italy but also that centre. Those nobles gave that domain a name in Latin language, Caput Dalphini which translated means Cape of the Dolphins for the frequent view in those times of some of those marine mammals present in the vicinity of the local headland.

One more is related to an expression by locals who called it Cau Dal, the first word meaning cape while the second according to historic information was taken by a member of an important family who lived in that centre in the 15th century.

A further one according to another supposition derives by the Niçoise language from the words Cau Daï for the shape of the headland which saw from the sea appears as a scythe.

That area since ancient times was explored by Phoenicians and Greeks probably inserted in a very active network of small harbours established east of Massalia, the current city of Marseilles which was the first Hellenic permanent settlement in France in 600 BC founded by a colony coming from Phocacea, corresponding to the current Turkish town of Foça in the province of Izmir.

The following centuries had similar chronological stages of those of other towns and cities of the Côte d´Azur, populated by Celts, the previously mentioned  Ligurians who establishment a settlement becoming later a land under Roman rule for a long time.

The Roman Empire since the times of Cemelenum, the current neighbourhood of Nice called Cimiez elevated as Capital of the province of the Alpes Maritimae in the 1st century founded by Emperor Augustus in 14 BC used all the coastal villages for its military and commercial purposes on the Mediterranean highlighting very active trade operations with Sardinia, Corsica and  the Balears Islands.

In medieval times Cap-D' Ail  entered in the territory of the Genoese League from the 7th to the 8th century times which were characterised by numerous Saracen raids which in 859 and 880 destroyed many coastal settlements and including pretty big, developed towns as Nice.

Powerful and noble Guelph and Ghibelline families linked to the most noble Genoese dynasties fought for a very long time for the rule of several present municipalities along that coastline.

For that to face a possible, large expansion of Genoa many local communities became strong, loyal allied of another Maritime Republic, the Tuscan Pisa, declared enemy of the current capital of Liguria.

The chronological historic stages continued with the influence of the Duchy of Savoy since 1388.

Under rule of that aristocractic House, Cap-D' Ail  became a place mainly used to celebrate diplomatic meetings, its official name was changed in 1561 in Capo D´Aglio during the times of Duke Emmanuel Philibert well known for his peculiar nickname Iron head who decreed the use of the Italian language in all the domains of that powerful House.

That was a pretty curious event because despite that family was descendant of a Saxon dynasty was originally Francophone since the times of the first noble exponent as the emblematic Count Humbert I born in Maurienne, a valley in the department of Savoie.

The former Capo D' Aglio remained linked to that influential House until 1860 when after the notorious Treaty of Turin signed by King Victor Emmanuel II and Napoélon III, President of the Second French Republic it became an official land of France.

That agreement was a sort of territorial reward for the support the Kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia received during the Second Italian War of Independence against the Austrian Empire related to the conquest of the Reign of Lombardy-Venetia once under rule of the House of Habsburg, annexed to the new Kingdom of Italy proclaimed in 1861.

In a more contemporary era the resort was part of the boundaries of La Turbie until 1908 when on 30th December of that year was established that official Municipality.

In the 40's during the Second World War, that centre was occupied by the German Hereesegruppe G, commanded by the Division Group General Johannes Blaskowitz released by the allied on 3rd  September 1944 during the notorious Operation Dragoon with protagonists the 1st Airborne Task Force led by Major General Robert Tryon Frederick supported by the U.S Seventh Army  General Alexander McCarrell Patch.

After that historic event which changed the destiny of Europe and the world with a laborious re-construction of the structures, infrastructures and roads decade by decade the advent of the Tourism Industry occupies the highest economical ranking of Cap-d´Ail since the 60's.

The municipal core is mainly developed behind its port and Avenue Marquet which starts in correspondence of the beach with the same name running from west to east directly entering in the boundaries of Monaco flanking the famous Stadium, Stade Louis II.

Avenue du Port is the eastern promenade bordering the harbour a short distance from the famous heliport of the famous Principality  while Allée Auguste Dalmasso corresponds to a street which is a sort of urban belt largely covering the northern side of the municipality ending its course next to Avenue du Trois Septembre the main artery which meets the famed Boulevard Charles situated in the Grimaldi State.

One of the highlights of Cap-d´Ail apart to be a chic hallway, opulent connection to the nearest Monaco which is in its kind a more than relevant attraction is certainly Château de l ´Hermitage also known as Château Malet.

You can start the visit from that iconic manor, a superb building which is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating local symbols, its name is after the old owner, Edward Malet, an eminent English citizen who was also British Ambassador in Germany in Berlin in the late 19th century, a character who played an important role to increase the fame of that French seaside resort.

That British politician had already bought in 1880 some lands in Saint-Laurent in Èze but very attracted by the beauty of the French Riviera decided to purchase a plot of land in Cap-d´ Ail in 1892.

Once owner of that area he commissioned the construction of that magnificent masterpiece to a talented Danish architect called Hans Georg Tersling who lived in the nearest Menton, a figure who was very active along all the superb Côte D´Azur with very successful works. (If you are interested I wrote a post about that splendid seaside town)

Mr. Malet chose that distinguished figure for his fame because the Dane already reached an extreme popularity in France for several outstanding executions such as the Hotel Bristol at Beaulieu-sur-Mer , Grand Hotel du Cap Martin, l Metropole Hotel of Monaco and the Orthodox Church of Menton.

In addition hat talented character projected several beautiful villas and mansions in different corners of the French Riviera such as Villa Masséna, Nice, Villa Cyrnos, Roquebrune-Cap Martin, Villa Artheruse, Cape Martin and Villa La Loggia, Villefranche-sur-Mer  among others.

That splendid building ended in 1896 was elevated mixing several styles with a use of different architectural elements very scenic such as big columns, a huge dome and a wide terrace on the top in a traditional Italian, Neoclassical style.

That construction is addition is in its kind a great inspiration of a German Baroque palace, established on three levels including the ground floor surmounted by a beautiful tower with small columns with furthermore the great presence of a wonderful semicircular portico.

The exterior layout is greatly highlighted by fine decorations, beautiful sculptures, refined stuccoes, imposing pillars, all architectural elements giving that construction a glitzy French Belle Époque image resembling a bit to the famous Palace of Versailles, that magnificent royal château lying at approximately 20,0 kilometres from Paris in the Yvelines Department.

Furthermore to embellish the environment all around that magnificent, huge mansion to give it an aspect of extreme grandeur were placed in very strategic corners some splendid allegoric statues coming from a noble mansion of the city of Romeo and Juliet, the Palazzo Canossa of Verona.

The interior is equally stunning, arranged  linking the most stylish decorations of Baroque, Rococo and Belle Époque styles a special  highlight is a large hall called Salle de Bal, the Dancing Hall designed in a splendid Italian style on a long and wide rectangular plan.

The stupendous ceiling was completely decorated with themes which took inspiration by the Royal Palace of Wurzburg in Germany and in addition to donate much more appeal, the environment was completed with the placement of elegant classical Louis XIV style furniture.

The majestic, stylish stairs next to other architectural elements were executed using fine marble as main material with balustrades highlighted by Art Nouveau forged iron works while a a luminous, charming spacious lounge was established to host the Orchestra completing a setting absolutely wonderful.

That impressive huge mansion is certainly a shining diamond of Cap-d´Ail, totally encircled by a marvellous, big garden facing the Mediterranean and perhaps it could be much more attractive despite a great restoration because unfortunately during the Second World War that superb jewel suffered severe damages due to the bombing of the Allied and only a part of the original structure was saved.

In 1961 an architect from Nice of Italian origin called Secondo Buzzi was named as director of the operations of refurbishment of the entire complex, in cooperation with that figure worked an English Garden-Architect named Russel Page who managed the remodelling of the gardened spaces.

That talented British landscaper created a sort of Japanese garden introducing exotic plants combined in different setting surrounded by different kinds of flowers, next to that in the design were included huge rocks, shaped, giant stones placed in different corners to complete an outstanding scenery.

In the last decades there were some further restorations to keep in excellent conditions the beautiful frescoes and the stylish decorations present of the Dancing Hall which needed to be refreshed due to deterioration.

As additional historic detail is that magnificent residence reached a notable popularity when it hosted Queen Victoria of Great Britain and King Leopold II of Belgium who spent in that place several, pleasant days during their holidays on the striking French Riviera.

The Château des Terraces, the Castle of Terraces is another icon of the town, a beautiful palace designed in Italian style erected in 1890 for a British banker called William Mendel.

In 1895 Georgi Alexandrovich, brother of Tsar Nikolaj II bought it and since then it became the summer residence of the Russian Imperial Family with constant stays of Prince Mikhail, Princess Olga but especially of Empress Maria Fedorovna, spouse of Tsar Aleksandr III also known as Dagmar of Denmark because daugter of King Christian IX, Monarch of that Scandinavian Kingdom.

That noble entourage and the charm of that superb residence reached in a very short time an extreme notoriety becoming soon the right place to receive several prominent guests such as the members of the Royalty of the United Kingdom, the former French President Faure next to other distinguished figures linked to the highest aristocracy and political spheres.

The  Château de Terrasse in the following years had other owners, after the Second World War it was purchased by Fredric Buckingham, a wealthy British Diplomatic who was Vice Consul of Great Britain in France sold later in 2001 to the municipality.

That stupendous building is in a hymn to the most sumptuous elegance of that century comparable to those beautiful mansions you can admire on the Italian lakes Como and Maggiore.

A notable highlight is certainly the wonderful, wide front side highlighted by superb red inter winded lines, stylish balustrades, symmetrical rectangular windows reminiscent the most charming aesthetic architecture of that period closely linked to the most fine Tuscan architectural canons completed by refined balconies which offer a splendid view overlooking the magnificent Côte D´Azur.

The fabulous garden boasts a surface of over 2000, 0 square metres is highlighted by a wonderful, rich Mediterranean vegetation in which was established a path developed around the villa, ideal for relaxing walks enjoying in many of its corners stunning panoramic views on the local coastline.

The Interior is simply divine, an exaltation of marvellous stuccoes, glitzy tromp d´oeil paintings, elaborated stuccoes which give the environment a sort of Royal image.

The inspiration of the setting was a mixture of great, traditional Florentine details reminiscent the most charming Renaissance period lived in the capital of Tuscany and for some rooms, the model  was that represented by the sumptuous Parisian halls of the  Château de Versailles.

Apart those two majestic buildings you can not miss to take a look to the famous mansion of the Lumière family, La Perle Blanche, another superb local attraction erected in 1902 but the architect who led the works is unknown.

That stylish building is in its kind a rare example of constructions because it is not oriented towards the Mediterranean but facing the Hotel Eden.

It originally had two entrances on the northern and southern sides while today just one is accessible, one of its great highlights is definitely the high, elegant light front side, the facade boasts a magnificent step bordered by a scenic balustrade, simply stunning is in addition the symmetry of the big rectangular windows with a great execution of fine outlines.

After the Second World War that superb mansion was transformed in a holidays house and in 1975 it was acquired by the French Government while currently it is used as a branch headquarter of the Ministry of the Interior.

The presence of many other beautiful villas mainly erected in the 19th and 20th centuries are other beautiful attractions of Cap-d´Ail.

.Among the most important worth a mention the Hotel Eden Palace, former Grand Hotel  built at the end of the 19th century highlighted by a sumptuous, majestic facade.

It is a striking building developed on four levels with a scenic, huge pediment established in the front side, boasting a beautiful portico formed by big columns highlighting the entrance established over a classical, light step.

It was since its inception elevated as an iconic emblem because it made the history of hospitality and incoming Tourism of the seaside resort hosting several prominent figures linked to the highest national, international cultural and aristocratic spheres.

Villa Primavera is a further mandatory deserving to be seen, it is an outstanding mansion commissioned by Alphonse Lenoir designed in 1911  by the architect Demerlé.

The building was developed on a large rectangular plan on four levels and it shows as main highlight a perfect symmetry of doors and windows while in the southern facade you can admire a beautiful semicircular balcony with a very scenic portico supported by big, stylish columns.

Villa Rondine is another which worth a mention well known because it was often frequented by the Swedish actress Greta Garbo and Grimaldi Family.

The structure is highlighted by a large balcony covering a large section of the main facade boasting a beautiful terrace surmounted by a pergola with Doric columns

Another one I suggest you to take a look is Villa Castellamar, established in 1905 encircled by a stupendous, big gardened space boasting a very attractive front side highlighted by stunning neoclassical columns with fine capitals forming a wide portico.

Its construction was considered since its elevation pretty eclectic linking different kinds of elements of Renaissance, Neoclassical styles but also with a touch of Liberty architectural details.

Villa les Violettes is another charming construction elevated in the same year of the previous, very stylish is its magnificent western rounded facade covered by a wonderful semicircular cupola placed above a high wall on which were inserted two large, high rectangular windows.

The stunning front side in addition is characterised by the presence of charming balconies, beautiful decorative, blue painted, handmade ceramic elements and you will also notice a very scenic medallion containing the name of the mansion.

Of the same period is Villa les Roses erected in 1910, a great highlight of that building consists in fine Neo Louis XIV decorations and reliefs established on the main facade.

Its layout shows furthermore fabulous symmetrical series of bow windows, a splendid long balcony flanked by a fascinating balustrade with a pleasant stone step on its left side.

A special masterpiece of the early 20th century is certainly Villa Roc Fleuri which resembles to a mansion you can admire in Stresa, Baveno or in other towns of the beautiful Italian Lake Maggiore.

That scenic building was originally a Hotel-Restaurant called Le Roc Fleuri, the flowered rock, changing its name some years later when it was renamed Hotel Réserve du Cap-Fleuri becoming in 1920 a property of Marquise Buccico in 1920 who sold it just one year later to Cottenot family.

Highlighted by a very appealing ochre tonality, beautiful painted shutters and doors in a dark green colour  with a central balcony on the second floor covering three quarter of the main front side

Apart those fine details worth a mention a refined, light balustrade on the ground floor and a further attraction is a fabulous garden with palm trees completed by a large variety of other Mediterranean plants.

Other villas which worth to be mentioned are Castel Lina which had as guests in the past the British Royal Family, Villa Paloma, Villa les Mouettes, and Villa La Colombe among others.

The famous and historic Torre D´Abello was the iconic towering checkpoint in medieval era when the town suffered several and continuous attacks by the Spanish fleet during the times of the rule of the Duchy of Savoy.

That defencive construction was frequently damaged and restored in different periods but. today that building which heroically served to protect that French centre for centuries is a private property remaining a distinctive, local emblem representing in its kind a relevant piece of history of the current municipality.

The Parish Church of Cap-d´Ail is L´Eglise Notre Dame Du Cap Fleuri built in 1909 and consecrated by the Bishop of Nice one year later its elevation.

Despite the construction was erected in contemporary times it has a very pleasant aspect in perfect harmony with the other structures present in the local environment.

Developed on a long rectangular base that Sacred temple is covered by a splendid dark gable roof with a very attractive, light front side on which you can see a series of beautiful lined arched windows. Another highlight is an appealing high tower adjacent to the main body of the Ecclesiastic complex dominating a charming arched portal with a rosette at the entrance.

The beaches of the resort are undoubtedly another main attraction and La Mala is of course the most prestigious and famed.

It is a stunning bright, sandy stretch lining crystalline, emerald waters of the Mediterranean and for name, popularity it is since a long time ago the most frequented and photographed.

Considered for its position the favourite by several prominent characters who visited that town, at dawn or sunset that marvellous beach is simply wonderful for the magic reflections of the sun rays falling on the sand and water but also at night in presence of artificial lights shows a very appealing image.

Since a long time ago it is declared as one of the most picturesque beaches of the entire French Riviera elevated as a sort of coastal monument.

Very captivating is also Plage Marquet situated next to the harbour. Very appreciated by sailing, diving and surfing lovers in a peaceful corner the water does not reach high depth for that it is frequently chosen by families with children.

A further positive feature is that it is easily reachable due to the absence of natural barrier and since the advent of tourism in Cap-d´Ail  a great attraction for many foreign tourists.

Plage de Pissarelles is another beach I recommend to visit. Extremely loved by locals, despite it has a wild rocky aspect highlighted by the presence of gravel on its surface lining depth waters.

Surrounded by scenic cliffs, it is particularly chosen as favourite destination by divers and people fond about snorkeling, it is not extremely wide but very admired by photographers for its very special formation.

The Pointe des Douaniers is a further one, a small beach, ideal to practise water sports, it is not a stretch of a big size but it is very charming for its position because it is situated on a  rock of volcanic origin which is a great attraction in its kind.

Do not miss a pleasant walk along Le Sentier du Littoral, a fantastic promenade 3, 5 kilometres long  bordering a superb coastal section.

A further highlight is that it is situated just five minutes walking from Monaco Heliport which provides a service of Helicopters to the International Airport of Nice with a flight which approximately endures 10 minutes.

In the immediate proximity next to the prestigious destinations as Monaco and Nice, I suggest you to visit Éze, a great place you will remember for a long time, a magnificent resort beloved by the notorious German philospher Friedrich Nietzsche.

That centre also has other several attractions offering striking panoramic views overlooking Cap Ferrat and a small but charming medievall core highlighted by a superb artistic patrimony.  (I wrote a post about that place in the case you are interested)

I also recommend yoy a magnificent excursion to the nearest La Turbie, from a fantastic hilly plateau you will have a magnificent, complete image of Monaco from the summit of the Tête de Chien, the Dog´s Head, a spectacular rocky promontory at 450, 0 metres of altitude.

That site also has a notable, historic value linked to the Roman Empire because it said that such limestone outcrop was the site where Julius Caesar stationed his legions after the Gaul conquest.

Closely related to the Roman history in that place you can admire the Tropaeum Alpium, the Trophy of Augustus, erected in the 6th century B.C by that Emperor to celebrate his victory against the Ligurians.

That monument was restored in the early 20th century, it is 35, 0 metres high despite in the past with the statue of that Roman leader reached a height of 50,0 metres.

From a beautiful panoramic terrace you can admire in sunny days a fantastic image of the Riviera dei Fiori in Italy with protagonists the images of the fascinating centres of San Remo and Bordighera next to another spectacular as the gulf of Saint-Tropez.

In the case you are planning a tour, short break or holidays to the French Riviera with the intention to stay in Cap-d' Ail I added some links with information and suggestions abour some recommended Hotels and do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

The local cuisine is also is something which will delight you, totally reflecting the traditional Mediterranean gastronomy of that corner of the French Riviera with some Ligurian influences.

Many typical plates of the area are also linked to the traditional cuisine of Provence using as main ingredients in the preparation of many dishes olive oil, aromatic herbs, parsley, rosemary, aubergines, fresh vegetables and the exquisite, superb, local basil.

Excellent are fish and seafood especially the always fresh, delicious anchovies used for the famed Pissaladière but also minced and combined with different kinds of mixed salads, served as appetisers or in an assorted starters.

Also excellent are squid, prawns and mussels, very appreciated is the iconic fish soup Bouillabaisse just like the famed Salad Niçoise or the traditional, famed Tapenade which are among the most popular local specialities.

In the local gastronomy there is a rich use of Mediterranean herbs, an old tradition transmitted generation by generation and one speciality very famous is the Soupe de Pistou, a soup with basic ingredient basil.

Worth a special mention others notorious delights such as the delectable, tastefully Ratatouille and the delicious Socca, a local replica of the Ligurian focaccia.

Notable is the ample selection of fine wines with a wide choice, among the most suggested are the locals Cabernet-Sauvignon and a local fine Syrah

Also great and of high reputation are Cassis, Bandol, Bellet with a further special mention also for some others as the excellent, highly appreciated Grenache, Clairette, Semillon and Rolle among others.

Nice Airport is very close, just 21, 0 km away and by A8 Motorway you can reach that resort in about 30 minutes driving. In the case you wil not enjoying a Fly & Drive you can can approach the resort by a Bus network service covering the French coast also stopping in Cap d´-Ail.

That very charming place if you are planning a trip to France visiting that superb coast called Côte D´Azur is a destination highly suggested.
