The history of Paradiso is very interesting always culturally linked to Lugano since many centuries ago due to its proximity but with its own important chronological stages more than considerable.

It originally arose as a settlement populated by a Celtic tribe, a branch of the Insubri, who established many villages also in the nearest Italian territories of Northern Lombardy and Eastern Piedmont, settlers who were mainly devoted to pastures, farms and fishing.

They were reached by the Ligurians, other Celts who originally populated the Northwestern Mediterranean coast forming a unique ethnic group and  that land was later visited by some Etruscan colonists who after a pretty long trip from Tuscany and Umbria their  strongholds in the Italic Peninsula also landed in that Southern Swiss territory establishing there some small villages.

Those populations during the times of the Roman Empire expansion started to be assimilated by those colonists since 196 BC, a long massive campaign led towards the Alpine areas culminated by Augustus in 15 BC with a total conquest of the current Canton of Ticino partially occupied some decades before by Julius Caesar.

In the local boundaries was established a small Imperial Presidium, a kind of headquarter used by troops in transit with in its proximity established check points to control the traffics of the northern coast of the Ceresium, old former name of Lake Lugano.

The fall of Rome was mainly due to numerous invasions in that geographic point with protagonists the Ostrogoths who penetrated in several occasions those territories and later by  the Lombards who fixed in the current Canton of Ticino one of their domains before to be defeated by the Franks in the 8th century, a period closely linked to the incorporation of that land in the Holy Roman Empire.

Those new governors developed a flourishing activity mainly concentrated in agriculture and commerce establishing a well organised territorial system highlighted by a precise subdivision in counties and sub-counties.

That area started since then to have marked borders, in some cases arose local realities with a determined autonomy depending of the relevance in terms of production, trade activities and merits in an era in which the traditional Feudalistic system started to be particularly rooted.

In medieval times the Duchy of Milan and the Comune of Como were protagonists of a long war all around the boundaries of the current Canton due to a desire of expansion towards north to have the leadership in that corner of Switzerland.

That area was considered of extreme relevance, a very strategic point of operations and the goal of both contenders was to acquire a special hallway which was a large open gateway leading to the heart of the European Continent.

The reasons of those numerous disputes which included also Paradiso were that unique chance to control an  important corridor between the Alps and the Pianura Padana, that vast plain crossed by the river Po in which are situated several relevant Northern Italian cities and towns.

The Milanese families Visconti and Sforza governed the former village which since 1335 was known as Calprino, one of its present boroughs, that former name officially appeared in the medieval maps in the 14th century, the denomination was changed in 1929 for a specific reason to avoid confusion with a small centre situated on the other shore of the lake.

For a long time the continuous clashes against that eternal rival of the Lario highlighted the local history but the Duchy of Milan had to face later the troops of the former Swiss League, paladins of the Calvinism contrary to the presence of Catholic, foreign rulers in that territory, oriented furthermore to form a group of Cantons under the same flag which will be the future of the entire country with also the aim to abolish the feudalism.

After the fall of those lords linked to the Capital of Lombardy that area joined the Swiss Confederation developed in Cantonal subdivisions in the 16th century, exactly in  1512.

Since then the history of the current resort had a destiny always closely related to Lugano which also became with Bellinzona and Locarno one of the Italian speaking capitals of the Canton of Ticino.

The links which eternally commuted Paradiso to that relevant centre have always been more than positive also because in its boundaries were established different luxury Hotels favouring notable flows of visitors towards that city with an increasing business creating a very prosperous life with the tourism industry as absolute protagonist of the economical scene becoming the first and main resource in the ranking.

That Swiss centre started to be extremely popular as a famous holiday destination after the opening of the Gotthard Railway in 1882 and also thanks to the established famed funicular inaugurated in 1890 permitting the ascent to the  Monte San Salvatore which became another relevant attraction those event elevated the resort as a place of prestige.

It was since then that Paradiso became something of extremely desired, that magnificent combination consisting in lake and mountain, ideal scenery for stupendous stays delighting the view of every visitor, immediately reached incredible peaks in terms of Incoming tourism with a very  high index of requests receiving a multitude of prominent tourists.

Special itineraries ended on the trendy, glamorous Côte D´Azur visiting the charming Cannes, Antibes, Nice but with many people who also discovered the immense fascination of other places such as Menton, Saint-Tropez, Juan-les-Pins and Èze among others.

A classical route was that to reach Sorrento with its ravishing Peninsula, Amalfi Coast Positano as great protagonists with marvellous chance from there by boat to land on the idylllic Capri.

During those trip were naturally enjoyed emblematic cities of art such as Pisa, Florence, Rome, Naples while for the tourists coming from the capital of Austria the first stages were the marvellous Venice followed by the romantic Verona and the fascinating Lake Garda.

That tourist trend highly captivating was closely linked to future operations in outgoing in a more contemporary era managed by the most important Tour Operators organising tours with the aim to offer stunning holidays in the most renowned European resorts, retracing itineraries which marked golden ages in the history of tourism.

Lake Lugano was since then a very enjoyable stop related to all that offering a superb stay thanks to its mild climate all year next to a marvellous image which inspired many people who inserted it as favourite destination to repeat frequently during a future trip without hesitations.
