COMO - MAGNIFICENT CITY ON A SUBLIME LAKE
Visit the Capital of Como Lake
I would like to briefly introduce a destination that has been part of my main programming for many years in terms of Tour Operator operations and highlighting the beauty of Como, the magnificent capital of the Lario.
Como is a center of great historical and cultural importance since Roman times located on the southern shore of the homonymous lake basin for centuries an elite tourist destination and commercial center of Lombardy.
You can start the visit from the square where the Sinigaglia Stadium stands to begin a wonderful, relaxing walk on the extensive and panoramic lakefront flanked by the pleasant Giardini Pubblici The Public Gardens containing a series of sculptures, statues and commemorative monuments.
From there in a very short time you will reach the majestic and imposing Volta Temple, a building of typical neoclassical origin erected in 1927 by Federico Frigerio to commemorate the centenary of the death of Alessandro Volta, eminent scientist and illustrious son of Como to whom this monumental Mausoleum was dedicated.
Volta Temple also has functions of Museum containing drawings, projects, documentation with formulas, written reports concerning various experiments carried out by the very famous inventor.
Walking for just some minutes once reached the port you will enter in the beautiful historic center of the city passing through the very large and always lively Piazza Cavour, the beating heart of the city's social and cultural life.
In this square can stop in front of the Broletto, a splendid medieval building erected in 1215 with functions of administrative and municipal headquarters in that era.
You can focus on the main façade which from an architectural point of view brings together all the canons of the best fifteenth-century style after having been restored and enlarged, preserving in any case splendid lines and details of astonishing elements of Romanesque and Gothic, masterpieces of the Lombard high school.
You can follow with the nearby imposing and marvelous Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, known simply as “Duomo,” and official seat of the Diocese of Como.
It is an authentic masterpiece of the Middle Ages with a superlative façade magnificently decorated, containing in its layout stupendous pilasters, beautiful statues,valuable sculptures praising biblical stories and the extraordinary dome designed by the architect Filippo Juvarra which reaches a height of 75.0 meters at its highest point.
Visiting the interior you will admire a magnificent baroque altar and extremely valuable paintings executed by illustrious artists such as Bernardino Luini and Gaudenzio Ferrari as well as superlative decorations and sculptures by the well-known, talented Campionesi Masters alongside a significant collection of precious tapestries.
Very close stands the Casa del Fascio, a structure erected in reinforced concrete, steel and glass, an example of very clear and marked rationalist architecture by Giuseppe Terragni
Walking along the nearest Via Vittorio Emanuele, popular Como shopping artery par excellence, you will reach the heart of the picturesque medieval heart of the Como which has its fulcrum in the fascinating Piazza San Fedele, focal point of the city's commercial life in the Middle Ages.
In front of you stands the Basilica dedicated to the same Saint stands, a beautiful ecclesiastical building with outlined and refined Romanesque lines with additional elements in Baroque style inserted at the rear.
You will set off then towards the nearby Porta Vittoria which represents one of the historic gates of Como located next to the imposing medieval walls that surrounded the city in the shape of an irregular quadrilateral with arched entrances developed at each cardinal point.
It' time for a lunch and Como offers a vast gastronomic offers. If you want to try something typically local enoy a delicious appetizer based on Salame Brianza DOP, Pancetta Lariana, Saraceno bread crostini and Russian salad.
About first course delicious are Gnocchi with Taleggio or Risotto with Perch and you can continue why not choosing Fried Alborelle with Mixed Salad or Beef Stew with Polenta gratinated with Zincarlin.
After your lunch you can reach the Funicular Station situated a very short distance from the harbour to enjoy an unforgettable ascent to the small, romantic center of Brunate, reaching an altitude of 715.0 meters in just a few minutes.
This charming village is very famous for the presence of the well-known "Balcony of the Alps", a spectacular viewpoint that offers breathtaking views of the entire city of Como,a large part of the Lariano basin,the sublime Cernobbio with the astonishing Villa D' Este and above all numerous glimpses unforgettable on various Alpine peaks that mark the Italian-Swiss border.
Just two minutes walking from there you can contemplate images of incalculable beauty visiting the beautiful Church of Sant' Andrea Apostolo, a religious temple with varied architectural lines combining baroque and neoclassical.
The church contains the remains of the Blessed Maddalena Albrici and an impressive pipe organ.
Very close you can admire the Church of the Madonna of Pompei and enjoying a pleasant walk through the picturesque alleys of Brunate breathing in the magical air of ancient times.
After this pleasant itinerary you can come back to the Funicular Station coming back to Como city.
