Japan, a member state of the G7, a major regional power in Asia, the third largest economy in terms of gross domestic product and the fourth largest in terms of purchasing power, the fourth largest exporter and the sixth largest importer in the world has planned to start to introduce visas for digital nomads and remote workers in the coming weeks.
The reference announcement comes from the ISA, the Agency dedicated to Immigration Services that would allow international citizens who wish to stay in Japan longer than allowed by the standard 90-day tourist visa, to stay for six months working from anywhere in the country without being employed by a Japanese company.
The offer will be extended to remote workers from 49 countries and territories including the United States of America that have tax treaties and reciprocal visa waiver agreements.
The new digital nomad visas will be available to those earning ¥10 million yen, approximately €60,500 or more per year including freelancers with the programme expected to go into effect at the end of march.
There are also other requirements such as applicants have their own private health insurance, but spouses and children of workers will also be able allowed to stay in Japan for the duration of their visit.
Those living in Japan temporarily will not be issued with residence cards or certificates which which would entitle them to certain government benefits.
Local media reported that this digital nomad visa would not be renewable, meaning recipients would have to return to leave the country for at least six months and reapply for a new one if they wished to return.
