Wizz Air Hungary Ltd, known as Wizz Air, Hungarian ultra - low coast carrier group headquartered in the capital of the country, Budapest founded in 2003 has been awarded as Best Airline for Carbon Reduction during the 1st edition of the Carbon Awards 2024 organized by World Finance.
The Hungarian company was recognized for its outstanding contribution to reducing carbon intensity and efforts in developing more sustainable practices in the avion industry.
The Carbon Awards, conferred annually by World Finance aim to reward companies ad organizations that stand out for their concrete impact and innovative solutions in the fight against climate change.
The 2024 edition gave particular emphasis to tangible results in the field of sustainability ans visionary strategies applied in various sectors with a special focus on the aviation industry.
Wizz Air continues to take a leadership role in decarbonisation of the aviation industry, boasting the lowest CO₂ emission per seat in the industry at just 52 grams.
The Hungarian airline also has one of the youngest and most efficient fleets ; more than 60% of its fleet of 225 aircraft is made up of ultra – efficient Airbus321neos capable of reducing fuel consumption by 20% per flight.
This recognition comes as Wizz Air continues to make significant progress towards its ambitious goal of reducing carbon emission intensity by 25% by 2030.
In addition to renewing its fleet, the company aims to have 10% of its flights run on fuels with a lower environmental impact, such as SAF, sustainable, aviation fuel by 2030 and to achieve that, Wizz Air is investing in SAF companies, entering into supply agreemenents with strategic partners.
In preparation for the EU's upcoming mandates, the group recently announced two SAF – powered routes such as Budapest - Barcelona and Budapest - Brussels Charleroi and during this trial phase Wizz Air will collect information from passengers through a dedicated survey to assess their awareness of sustainable aviation modes.
Earlier this year, Wizz Air won the World Finance award for Most Sustainable Low - Cost Airline for the fourth consecutive year, further consolidating its position as a global leader in environmentally friendly aviation.
