Valparaiso, Chile | International Visitors, Shopping Tourism and Mass Events Reactivated the Economy of the Destination

Valparaiso, famous seaport city on Chile's coast, located on the south side of a broad, open bay of the Pacific Ocean, northwest of the capital Santiago, forming with the municipalites of Concón, Quilpué, Villa Alemana and Viña del Mar a single large metropolitan area called Grand Valparaiso thanks to international visitors, shopping tourism and hosting mass events reactived the economy of the destination.

The first period of 2025 will leave a significant mark and truly record figures in reaching hotel occupancy rates of 71.98% which far exceeds the 62.30% of 2024 and the 63.1% of 2019, as the pre - pandemic season.

This impressive success has been driven by the arrival of several international visitors, especially Argentine citizens, who have been favoured by the currency exchange rate and by the unsual boom in tourism shopping welcoming about 330.00 travellers coming from abroad during the summer.

The wide range of mass events such as the renowned Viña del Mar Festival, a cultural icon symbolizes the vibrant spirit of Chilean and Latin American music, started in 1960, elevating itself as the oldest and largest music festival in Latin America and other cultural, entertainment and sports events in the Grand Valparaiso among them the Tennis Chile Open attracted thousands of visitors, consolidating the destination as one of the most attractive in Chile.

The Regional Director of Sernatur, the National Tourism Service of Chile, Pamela Venegas stated in local media that during February, more than 120.000 international tourists have entered in the region, the large majority Argentines, doubling last year's figure. 

In addition, it is relevant to take in high consideration that also the month of January doubled the previous year in terms of visitors and in general terms the arrival of approximately 330 thousand international tourists during the summer period has been driven mainly by shopping tourism.

The President of the Regional Chamber of Commerce of Valparaiso, Javier Torrejón, highlighted that, only last January, more than 190.000 Argentines visited the region, motivated by shopping opportunities and vacations, and an average expenditure of $544 is estimaded during their stay, which represents more than $100.0 million injected into the regional economy only in the first month of the season.
