Guatemala to provide a quality service to local citizens and tourists is strengthening safety with the implementation of Police units specializing in Tourist Security and in this context a group of 98 elements of DISETUR, the Tourist Security Division of PNC, the National Civil Police successfully concluded their training in the Specialization Course in Tourism Security.
Police professionalization is one of the priorities of the current government administration for national security and Guatemala tourism sector, a very emergent destination which is experiencing a continuous growth and a steady increase in tourist arrivals year by year with projections indicating around 3.0 millions by 2028 according to Report Linker and this initiative aims to showcase a country where tourists feel safe and protected from their arrival and during their entire stay.
During the training process participants strengthened their knowledge and skills in various area, including police doctrine, land navigation, weapons and shooting, tactical medicine, cartography, national geography, legal foundations, as well as humanistic and bilingual training.
Different physical training activities were also developed, such as swimming, self-defense and rescue techniques. This course was taught by experts in the field through six modules, which included police identity, operational skills and tourist security, among others.
The Deputy Minister of Security, Claudia Palencia expressed her congratulations to the tourism police for their dedication, efforts and commitment and the successful achievement in the training concerning the specialization course in Tourism Security.
The Police Units specializing in Tourist Security are integrated into the “Safe Holy Week Plan” during which will remain active to ensure the safety and well - being of tourists visiting different part of the country.
In addition the Deputy Minister also recognized the commitment of the Minister of the Interior, Francisco Jimenéz, highlighting the delivery of the Q1.500 voucher, intended for their food during the Holy Week operations and underlying that their work is indispensable to safeguard the safety and wel l – neign of all national and international citizens.
On the other hand the Director General of INGUAT, the Guatemalan Insititute of Tourism, Harris Whitbeck, stressed that the tourism police culminated with a training process that transcends beyond security highlighting that it's important because they are also ambassadors of tourism for the country.
The members of the police units acquired tourist knowledge, and know more about the country's history, culture, landscapes and routes. Being a tourism police officer is a great responsibility because tourists are looking for safety, respect and appreciation, and this trust falls largely on the tourist police.
