Brazil | To Host UN Tourism Summit for Africa and the Americas in 2026

Brazil, the largest and most populous country in South and Latin America is preparing itself to host the UN Tourism Summit for Africa and the Americas which will be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2026.

Rio de Janeiro, huge seaside and sprawling city in Brazil, famed for its iconic Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, stunning landmarks like the Sugarloaf Mountain, a granite peak with cable cars to its summit, 38 metres Christ the Redemer statue atop Mount Corcovado, its raucous Carnaval Festival, featuring parade floats, flamboyant costumes and samba dancers, considered the world's largest will be the venue of the third edition of the United Nations summit, a relevant event that will place the Latin American country and the city as epicentre in the international landscape.

The official handover was marked by the symbolic delivery of a sculpture of African osprey to the Brazilian Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, by Zambian Minister of Tourism Rodney Malindi Sikumba

This sculpture, a symbol of freedom and faith in Zambia, represents the transfer of the venue for the event, considered one of the most important in tourism worldwide.

After the official ceremony, the Minister of Tourism of Brazil said that it is an honour to receive this sculpture, which symbolizes the transfer of the headquarters of one of the most important meetings in world tourism.

The meeting brought together leaders from both continents, who highlighted the importance of strengthening integration between Africa and South America for the development of sustainable tourism

The summit, promoted by UN Tourism, the United Nations World Tourism Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations which promotes responsible, sustainable and universally – accessible tourism, focuses on discussing public policies, promoting investments and innovation within the global tourism sector.

Brazil is betting on its strategic location and its relevant historical ties with African nations to expand air connectivity between the continents.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, work is being done to strengthen international routes with the aim of attracting more visitors from the African continent and consolidating Brazil's position as the main gateway to South America.

One of the key developments in this direction was the inauguration, in March 2025, of the UN Tourism Office in Rio de Janeiro. This is the organization first official representation in the Americas and the Caribbean, the product of an initiative by the federal government to strengthen Brazil's international presence in the tourism field.
.
The new office works as a regional hub to facilitate the increase in the flow of tourists to Brazil and other countries on the continent, boosting the local economy and also fostering cultural and commercial exchange between Africa and Latin America.

With the realization of the summit, it is expected to boost tourism trade, generate new employment opportunities and attract greater investments to Brazil.

In addition, this important event will contribute to strengthening diplomatic relations between the South American nation and African countries, a move which aims to enhance the historical and cultural ties.

The Ministry of Tourism of Brazil stressed that the agenda of the event will integrate economic development, sustainability and international insertion, elements that, in his opinion, are fundamental for the future of global tourism.

In this way, Brazil is positioned as a benchmark for international events in the sector, betting on tourism as a key tool for multilateral cooperation and sustainable economic growth.
