Funchal, Madeira, Portugal | Record Breaking Cruise Numbers in Q1 2025

Funchal, the capital, largest city and a municipality in Portugal's autonomous Region ofr Madeira, a stunning archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa, a centre that offers a blend of historical charm, vibrant culture and natural beauty, known for its beautiful gardens, a bustling harbour, Madeira wine cellars, and its architecture, particularly in the old town experienced in its port a record breaking cruise numbers in Q1 2025.

APRAM, Adminstração da Região Autonóma da Madeira, the organisation manages port infrastructures in order to ensure access and movement of people and goods by sea recorded a total of 266.964 passengers and 105 stopovers, the best first quarter ever.

This achievement marks a 19.64% increase in passengers traffic and a 36.36% rise in cruise ship calls compared to the same period last year.

In addition to passengers, nearly 93.000 crew members passed through Funchal port between January and March 2025, an increase of 26.32% over the 73.541 recorded in the first quarter of 2024.

This growth reflects a strong upward trend in Madeira's cruise tourism sector that is currently very solid and continues to grow with record visitoe numbers and revenue increases. 

The economic recovery has been robust, supassing pre - pandemic levels, and revenue growth is projected to continue through 2026.

According to a study led by Associação Comercial e Industrial de Funchal, the association of trade and industry of Funchal, this surge in activity is estimated to have generated more than €22.0 million of direct impact on the regional economy. 

The estimate is based on the average spending of €61.40 per passenger or crew member during their time on the island. 

APRAM President, Paula Cabaço said that these numbers represent a significant achievement for the region and a result of the coordinated efforts between Ports of Madeira and the partners like companies, agents, and tour operators.

In addition President of APRAM emphasised that this sustainable growth demonstates the cruise industry's continued interest in Madeira, underliining the region's value as a key destination in the global cruise market.

With 2024 declared the bet year for cruise tourism in Madeira, APRAM believes that the strong results from the first quarter signal a very promising outlook for 2025.
