Mexico City, Mexico | A New Frida Kahlo Museum to Open in the Mexican Capital in September

A new museum dedicated to the life and art of Frida Kahlo, emblematic Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico will open in September in the Mexican capital concretely in Mexico City's historic Coyoacán district, captivating, bohemian neighborhood of the Latin American metropolis well known for its beautiful colonial architecture and picturesque cobblestone streets.

The development, opening and stewardship of the museum will be overseen by Fundación Kahlo, a non-profit organisation based in New York City, U.S. established by Kahlo family with the public opening of the site that will take place on 27th September 2025.

The museum will be set in the "Casa Roja" , the Red House, a private residence purchased by Kahlo's parents and passed down though the family over generations that it has been turned into an art institution by the famed Rockwell Group, in New York - based architecture firm.

The Casa Roja was gifted by the artist's grandniece Mara Romeo Kahlo, whom the Kahlo family said was the artist's closest living relative and heir.

Mara Romeo Kahlo in a statetment said that this is a dream long held by the family. Frida's legacy belongs to the world, but it begins here, on this land, in these homes and in the culture that shaped her.

Museo Casa Kahlo will allow to narrate new stories, share family secrets, host new voices, and build a future that honours the spirit of an artist remembered for her self portraits, pain and passion, and bold vibrant colours, celebrated in Mexico for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture and also for her depiction of the female experience and form.

The space stands adjacent to another important space central to Kahlo legacy, "Casa Azul" the Blue House, the home where Frida Kahlo was born, raised and die and where she lived with her painter husband Diego Rivera, iconic Mexican artist that with his works helped to establish the mural movement in Mexican and international art between 1922 and 1953.

Casa Azul was built by the father of Frida Kahlo, Guillermo, and will continue to be a museum, which is managed by the Fideicomiso de los Museos Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo trust and administred by the Central Bank of Mexico.

The museum in Casa Azul boasts a notable collection of artworks by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera ad other artists, along with the couple's Mexican folk art, pre - Hispanic artifacts, photographs, memorabilia, and personal ephemera.

"Casa Roja" in its essence is a museum that will explore Frida Kahlo beginnings, her debut in the world's art, highlighting influential cultural figures that she knew and inspired her.

The museum will also include exhibitions and rotating shows dedicated to contemporary art, with a special focus on Mexican, Latin American, and women artists.

The academic director at the Museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico Ciy, Adán Garcia Fajardo was recently appointed to be the director of the Museum Casa Kahlo.

Funding for the museum was made possible by the newly established non-profit Fundación Kahlo, which was started by the Kahlo family to preserve the artist's legacy and continue her efforts by promoting Mexican, Indigenous and Latin American art and culture and will be chaired by public relations veteran Rick Miramontez.

In addition, the New York City – based foundation will support the museum and related initiatives, including the biennial Kahlo Art Prize and a grant program.
