Australia tourism sector has shown strong performances, particularly in 2023 and 2024, with significant economic contributions and growth in visitor spending, domestic and international tourism demand is rebounding, and the sector is expected to continue its growth trajectory.
The country is set for record tourism year, with the sector expected to contribute $314.4 billion into the national economy, according to the projections from the WTTC, the World Travel & Tourism Council, the only global body representing the Travel & Tourism private sector and its numerous industries.
This strong growth of Australia reflects the continued robust recovery of the country’s tourism economy, with a boost from international demand, with visitors coming from abroad spending predicted to reach record levels and exceed pre - pandemic levels by 2025 and a thriving domestic travel market.
Visitor spending continues to rise across the board, with international visitor spending predicted to reach $39 billion, nearly 22% above last year, setting a record milestone for the country while domestic visitor spending is forecast to climb to almost $173 billion.
The travel and tourism sector in 2025 shows a further positive data, supporting 1.7 million jobs, representing over 11.5% of national employment and as relevant note, 100.00 more jobs than in 2024.
Together, these figures underscore Australia’s status as a top - tier global destination, well known for its diverse natural landscapes, vibrant cities, cultural experiences, and world - class infrastructure, the country is experiencing an increasing demand for experiential travel, including food and drink, cultural exploration, and outdoor activities, and Tourism Australia actively promotes the country as a destination through various marketing campaigns.
World Travel & Tourism Council President and CEO, Julia Simpson, said that Australia is proving once again that it is a powerhouse for Travel & Tourism. This record contribution to the economy and workforce reflects years of collaboration between industry and government.
WTTC President & CEO also said that she was delighted to see this momentum in Perth last year when Tourism Western Australia hosted WTTC’s Global Summit, a clear signal of the country’s leadership in the global tourism sector.

Further data released shows that in 2024 Australia’s Travel & Tourism sector contributed $297 billion to the national economy and supported 1.6 million jobs. International visitor spending totalled $32.1 billion and domestic visitor spending reached $123.7 million, numbers that reflect a relevant recovery.
World Travel & Tourism Council forecasts that by 2035, tourism and travel sector will contribute over $406 billion to Australia’s economy, and almost 12% share of GDP, and will support more than 2.1 milliomn jobs.
In addition visitor spending is expected to grow steadily, international visitor spending is forecast reach more than $52 billion, while domestic tourist spending is projected to hit almost $221 billion.
