Panama, a country located on the isthmus linking Central and South America, well known for its iconic canal, a vibrant culture and a rich biodiversity, is experiencing a relevant growth in tourist arrivals, job creation and foreign investment, a growth that is attributed to a combination of factors, including Panama's strategic location, attractive tourism offerings, and increasing digital adoption.
Within the framework of APEDE, the Tourism Forum of the Panamanian Associatation of Business the administrator of ATP, the Tourism Authority of Panama, Gloria De León, presented a positive balance on the performances of the tourism sector and detailed the strategies that are being implemented to strengthen the industry in the country.
According to the ATP administrator, the arrival of international toursits to Panama in January 2025 grew 3.4% compared to the same month in 2024, while tourism revenues reached $608.9 million, representing an increase of 19.2%.
In addition hotel occupancy exceeded 57% in January of this year, a figure that, although still below pre- pandemic levels, reflects a sustained recovery.
The administrator stressed that the tourism is one of the most inclusive and transversal sectors of the Panamanian economy and according to data from the WTTC, the Worls Travel and Tourism Council, the sector generated 392.000 jobs in 2024, equivalent to 19.5% of the country's total employment stating that when a tourist arrives, a whole value chain is activated, from the carrier, the receptionist and the chef, to the fisherman and the artisan.
Among the initiatives promoted by the ATP, the administrator mentioned a programme developed together with PROMTUR, the organisation that promotes innovative tourism strategies to promote Panama internationally as a tourist destination, which allows hotel occupancy to be measured in real time, facilitating more agile and effective decision - making.
The administrator also said that the ATP is committed to strengthening the convention tourism segment, offering incentives such as the free use of convention centres, which has allowed more than 60 conventions to be held so far this year.
In terms of connectivity, the official announced that Panama will receive new routes form Germany's Condor and Aeromexico airlines in June 2025, in addition to efforts to increase the frequency of flights from current airlines, with the aim of attracting more visitors.
Another of the outstanding projects is the reactivation of tourist insurance, after identifying safety as the number one factor that travellers consider when choosing a destination, according to an international study.
At the same time the administrator announced that the ATP is advancing in an international digital positioning strategy, with alliances on platforms such as Expedia, Despegar and Travelocity, and works together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that embasses and consulates promote the Panamanian tourism offer.
The ATP administrator also highlighted the action of the campaign "Tripea lo Tuyo" focused or promoting domestic tourism, and the strengthening of the Panama Stopover programme in alliance with Copa Airlines, which has achieved a 20% increase in transit stays.
Finally, the administrator underscored the importance of community - based tourism and infrastructure projects such as the BID, which invest $100 million in the improvement of public spaces in seven key tourist destinations, including Portobelo, Pedasí, Taboga and Santa Catalina.
The ATP head stated that every action has a direct effect on job creation. More connectivity means more visitors and greater consumption, better tourism promotion, more bookings, and community tourism, and more local opportunities. Investing in tourism is not only an economic commitment, it is a social and human decision and Panama has everything to become a benchmark for sustainable and quality tourism in the region.
