Porto, Portugal | Wondersense : a New Immersive Museum in the City

Porto, the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon, situated in the northwest of the country on the banks of the Douro River not far from the Atlantic Ocean well known for its rich cultural and historical heritage, highlighted by its stunning historic centre which was designed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, production of fine wines, and a vibrant atmosphere, one of the Iberian Peninsula major urban areas and a leading destination in the international tourism landascape has a new attraction, Wondersense, a new immersive museum that increases its tourist offering.

Situated in the heart of Porto’s historic area, near to some of the city’s biggest attractions, such as Livraria Lello, an iconic bookstore established in 1906 and Torre dos Clérigos, a 75 - metre  tall bell tower, a baroque masterpiece dating from the mid - 18th century, Wondersense opens its doors with the aim of becoming a new meeting point between art, emotion and fun and also assuming a didactic role in stimulating the sensory and emotional of visitors.

Developed in two buildings, five floors and more than a thousand square metres, Wondersense through artistic, sensory and technological experiences invites visitors to feel the world in an unprecedented and didactic way, awaking sensations, imaginations, emotions and human connections with the aim to propose a journey through the five senses, such as sight, hearing, smell, taste,  and touch, and signed by Marques Soares group,  a retail, and apparel & accessories company headquartered in Porto.

Wondersense CEO, Vasco Antunes said that this exhibition was born from a clear will : to create a place to disconnect from the digital and feel the world again with all the senses with the aim that this experiences leaves a real and lasting emotional mark.

Throughout the visit, participants are challenged to explore rooms dedicated to the senses where different environments awaken visual, sound, olfactory, tactile and gustatory stimuli.

Touch is explored through unexpected surfaces and moving structures, smell appears in spaces that summon memory through enigmatic aromas,  sound is transformed with voices distorted by interactive tubes, while vision is challenged by mirrors, lights, and chromatic patterns that create optical illusions.

The palate is also protagonist, through small taste provocations along the way. Also noteworthy are a ball pool, a balloon room and other recreational facilities and scenographic areas, which were designed to stimulate the body, curiosity and interactions between different ages.

The route was accurately designed using AI tools, not only as technical support, but as a creative tool, allowing visitors to explore the potential of error and also the unexpected.

In addition to the artistic and sensory proposal, the museum is committed to the emotional well - being of those who visit it, proposing a space for pause, reconnection and positive stimulation.

In a context marked by digital fatigue and the increase in phenomena such as anxiety and isolation, Wondersense uses the activation of the five senses to stimulate the production of the so called “happiness hormones” such as dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin and serotonin promoting feelings of balance, pleasure and lasting well – being.

Wondersense is open daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, with tickets available online, through the official website or directly on site.
