The project is part of a strategic initiative to enhance the destination tourism appeal and is supported by financial institutions Banco de Reservas and Banco Popular.
The development is promoted by Grupo Puntacana, a pioneering company in sustainable tourism with a legacy based on economic growth, social development, and environmental preservation, seeking to transform dreams into sustainable realities in the country in partnership with Meliá Hotels International, Spanish hotel chain founded in 1956 and headquartered in Palma de Mallorca.
The establishment will be situated within Punta Bergantín, a tourism complex backed by a government trust and developed by Grupo Reservas and the Ministry of Tourism nestled between Playa Dorada and Sosúa, covering an area of over 10 million square metres, focusing on low - density urban development to preserve the natural environment.
Meliá Bergantin Beach is planned to be a five - star hotel featuring 400 rooms, offering various amenities, including dining options, a beach club, pools, a spa, areas for children and it will cater to the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibtions) segment with dedicated facilities and services.
The hotel will be part of a complex developed under a public - private model, at no cost to the State within the Punta Bergantín master plan, a comprehensive development in Puerto Plata focused on creating a sustainable, world - class tourism and real estate destination. Key components include luxury hotels, the creation of 4.000 hotel rooms, the same number of residential units, recreation facilities like an 18 - hole golf course and a movie studio.
The plan also prioritizes ecological revitalization through marine nurseries, coral restoration, and wetland preservation, along with significant infrastructure improvements.
Dominican President Luis Abinader led the groundbreaking ceremony of the Bergantín Beach Hotel which took place on October, 21 attended by key figures including Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, Gabriel Escarrer, CEO of Grupo Puntacana, Frank Elias Ranieri, Representatives from Banco de Reservas and Banco Popular, as well as the Executive Director of the project.
The President of the Caribbean country pointed out that the development of this property marks the beginning of a new stage of national tourism aimed at sustainable development and represents a commitment aligned with the vision of consolidating this industry as an engine of national growth, adding that this project marks the relaunch of hotel tourism in Puerto Plata, a region with great real estate dynamism and a consolidated leadership in cruise tourism.
The President also announced the construction of the Amber Highway, which will connect Santiago de los Caballeros, Moca and Puerto Plata, which will facilitate access to airports and improve mobility, and in addition the revitalization of tourist areas such as Sosúa, with the aim of rescuing the historical value and reinforcing the development of the north coast.
