Russia | Launched its First Forest - Climatic Project in the Arctic

 Russia has launched its first forest climatic project in the Yamalo - Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YaNAO), also known as Yamalia, the northernmost region of Western Siberia, one of the largest in terms of territory of the Russian Federation, considered by the authorities a stable and dynamically developing region.  

As reported by Xinhua, the official state news agency of the People’s Republic of China citing the Project Office for Arctic Development, the initiative aims to restore forest ecosystems, and develop carbon monitoring in an area that covers 20.7 thousand hectares. 

The initiative recognizing its commitment in the sustainable development of the the region also aims to attract funding for regional projects and involves the establishment of a natural climatic testing ground for forest restorations and the organisation of a carbon monitoring system with operations include tree planting, remote observation, and soil research. 

This project  will enhance the capacity of forests to absorb greenhouse gases and is part of the plans of Russia to set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Director General of the Project Office for Arctic Development Maksim Dankin
said that the main objectives are to highlight the methodology of climate projects for Arctic territories and to stimulate the liquidity of such projects on the international market.
