China | Successfully Revitalised 88 Major Rivers and Lakes Across the Country

China through its Ministry of Water Resources has announced a successfully revitalisation of 88 major rivers and lakes across the country by the end of September, restoring natural water flows to waterways that have been dry for decades.

These brilliant achievements results stem from the “Mother River Rejuvenation” action plan, a nationwide initiative running from 2022 to 2025 aiming to restore hundreds of rivers and lakes, with significant focus on the Yellow and Yangtze river basins. The term “mother river” most famously refers to the Yellow River, the cradle of Chinese civilization and also the Yangtze River considered a mother river due to its cultural and economic importance.

Under the programme, tailored restoration plans were developed for each river and lake according to their unique environmental and hydological conditions, ensuring a targeted and sustainable approach to recovery as reported by Xinhua News, the official news agency of the People’s Republic of China.

Among the most notable successes are the Yellow River, which has maintained an uninterrupted flow for 26 consecutive years, thanks to specific water management policies, and the Beijing - Hangzhou Grand Canal, the world’s longest artificial waterway, which has seen water restored along its entire route for four years in a row after being dry for a century.

Other key achievements of relevance include the Haihe River, which saw a systematic rehabilitation reversing an ecological degradation in this severely water - scarce and polluted area, the Yongding River with uninterrumpted water flow for five years after dry sections had been reported for 26 years, and the Baiyangdian Lake, where stable ecological water levels were maintained for seven consecutive years.

Looking ahead, the Chinese government after these relevant results plans to extend the programme to additional river basins establishing a long - term mechanism to protect and revitalise the country’s waterways.
