Paraguay is actively working to promote the tourism development the “Chaco Paraguayo” as a sustainable tourism hub with the aim to position this destination within the national and international map.
The “Chaco Paraguayo” is a South American region located between the Pilcomayo and Paraguay Rivers, east of the Andes, characterized by a rugged, arid landscape with vast plains, thorn forests, savannas, and wetlands, making it South America’s second – largest forested ecoregion.
This land features a diverse range oif wildlife, including jaguars, giant anteaters, tapirs, and a rich bird population. Historically a home for indigenous peoples such as the Wichí and Qom, “El Chaco Paraguayo” has a significant portion of its economy based on cattle ranching and agriculture, with a global role in leather production.
The Paraguayan Chaco tourism features diverse experiences focusing on nature and wildlife, indigenous culture, Mennonite heritage, and historical sites. Key activities include wildlife viewing, especially for jaguars, pumas and Chacoan peccaries, and birdwatching in natural parks, cultural exchanges with indigenous communities, exploring historic settlements like Filadelfia, and visiting battlefields of the Chaco War.
The region offers adventure tourism through safaris, hiking, and boat trips, with the best time to visit being the cooler, drier season from June to September.
With the aim to promote this attractive Paraguayan destination, the Directors of Tourism Products Andrés Ortiz,: and of the Cabinet Ángel Bogado, representing the Minister of Tourism, Angie Duarte held a meeting with the Governor of Boquerón, a department of the Paraguayan Chaco, Harold Bergen and the departmental delegation was also made up the of the first lady of Boquerón, Ruthie Bergen and the Secretary of Tourism, Gladys Ojeda.
In this framework, they evaluated the possibility of having a “Michi No Eki” road station in the region, a proposal inspired by the Japanese model that seek to boost the local economy, promote domestic tourism and offer quality services to tourists who travel through the Chaco region.
On the other hand, an increase in the arrival of travellers to the department of Boquerón was announced, which confirms the growing interest in discovering the natural, cultural and gastronomic wealth of the Paraguayan Chaco, consolidating it as an emerging and competitive destination and generating the plans to promote it regionally and globally.
Governor Bergen highlighted tourism as an essential driver for regional development, in addition to its importance in economic diversification and in creating opportunities for local communities.
Senatur, the government branch that establishes the Paraguayan national tourism policy, guidelines and promotion, reaffirmed its commitment to continue working in an articulated manner with local authorities, promoting sustainable actions that strengthen the Chaco identity and the integral development of tourism in this region of Paraguay.
