IHG Hotels & Resorts | Revealed Plans to Open a New Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lumbini, Nepal

IHG Hotels & Resorts, British multinational hospitality company based in Windsor, Berkshire, England, UK has revealed plans to open a new Crowne Plaza hotel in Lumbini, an iconic Buddhist pilgrimage site in the Rupandehi District of Lumbini Province in Nepal, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, who was born in 623 B.C.

Lumbini is a major Buddhist pilgrimage destination featuring various attractions include the Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar, and numeous monasteries, an emblematic place where visitors can explore archaeological remains and soak in the spiritual atmosphere of the sacred garden.

The Crowne Plaza Lumbini is expected to open in 2026 and its development is the result of the signing of a management agreement between IHG Hotels & Resorts and Lumbini Heritage Limited marking the second Crowne Plaza hotel being developed in Nepal.

This development is part of IHG’s ongoing expansion in South Asia, where it operates several properties among them a good number of Crowne Plaza hotels.

The hotel will open its doors approximately four kilometres from the main pilgrimage site in Lumbini, and 18 kilometres from Gautam Buddha Airport aiming to cater to both spiritual travellers anf those attending meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE), including visitors from nearby Indian states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The property will feature 137 comfortable rooms and 10 suites, various meeting and event spaces and  a banquet hall, to accommodate different types of events.

The strategic location and facilities are expected to provide a competitive advantage in a market currently dominated by limited international hotel brands.

The hotel will join the Crowne Plaza upscale brand designed for both business and leisure travellers offering comfort and various amenities, characterized by a focus on guest connections, modern communal spaces, and intuitive service created to meet the needs of today’s travellers, with its hotels often located in city centres, resort destinations or near airports.
