Venezuela | A New Direct Maritime Route to Boost South - South Trade in Cooperation with China Launched

As reported by Venenezolana de Televisión (VTV), a state - run television station founded in 1964 and based in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, Venezuela in cooperation with China launched a new direct maritime route to boost South – South trade, a landmark step to enhance economic integration between Latin America and Asia.

This new initiative strengthen connectivity between the two continents linking Venezuela’s principal Caribbean ports with Tianjin, a major port city in northern China located on the shore of the Bohai Sea, the northwestern and innermost extension of the Yellow Sea, to which it connects via the Bohai Strait.

The new connection marks a significant advance in logistic cooperation, reducing transit time and cutting transportation costs between Latin America and Asia, and it is expected to increase the volume of bilateral trade and stimulate regional development through more efficient supply chains.

With this new maritime corridor, Venezuela and China not only strengthen bilateral ties but also contribute to the emerging multipolar trade landscape, with India included in the route next to other partners playing a growing role in connecting continents through innovation, infrastructure, and inclusive development.

According to regional observers, the initiative may also serve as a strategic bridge between Asia, Africa, and Latin America, expanding trade opportunities and aligning with India’s call for deeper South - South collaboration in logistic, energy, and technology.

Officals emphasised that this new route reflects a growing commitment among BRICS and BRICS+nations to strengthen trade networks that promote equitable global growth. As nations continues to champion inclusive connectivity projects across the Global South, from digital corridors to maritime routes, the new Venezuela - China link is seen as part of a wider effort to reshape international trade architecture.

The development of this new link complements the already inaugurated maritime route connecting the Brazilian cities of Salvador and Santana with the port of Gaolan in Zhuai Prefecture in southern China, which allows for a reduction in delivery times of 30 days and decrease in logistic costs of more than 30%, according to information from Brasil 247, a Brazilian news and political analysis website.
