Brazil | Launched a Five - Year National Plan for Biodiversity Protection

Brazil has launched a comprehensive National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for 2025 - 2030, a five - year framework aligning with global goals (like the Kunming - Montreal Framework) aimed to halt deforestation, restore ecosystems, protect species and manage sustainability.

The programme involves multi - sectorial actions, significant investment in restoration of 12 million hectares, and emphasizing Indigenous participation to meet targets like the global 30x30 goals.

The national plan is a long - term pact for sustainable development, aimed at restoring ecological balance, reducing ecological risks and creating more sustainable territories throughout the country.

Brazil has adopted this programme to strengthen biodiversity protection all around its territory over the next five years as reported by the official website of the country’s government in the section of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

The new strategy includes coordinated actions for the protection of the environment in all main biomes (areas with a homogeneous climate) with a plan containing more than 200 measures involving government ministries and agencies.

The main goal is to improve management to conserve ecosystems, including 80% of the Amazon and  restore at least 30% of degraded or altered land in each biome, including coastal and marine areas by 2030.

The strategy also takes into account the country’s international commitments to conserve biodiversity, which underpin its domestic policy.

Key Goals and Actions:

·    Halting Deforestation and Degradation: Strong focus on eliminating illegal deforestation, particularly in the Amazon, and preventing native vegetation conversion.

·   Ecosystem Restoration: A major push to restore 12 million hectares of degraded land across biomes, including agroforestry systems, by 2030.

·   Protected Areas: Aiming to manage 80% of the Amazon and 30% of other biomes (terrestrial and marine) by 2030.

·   Sustainable Management: Promoting sustainable land use. Bio – inputs and integrated crop – livestock – forest systems.

·   Invasive Species and Pollution: Reducing threats from invasive species and environmental pollution.

·   Inclusive Governance: Recognizing and integrating Indigenous peoples, traditional communities, and family farmers in conservation efforts.

ThThis plan represents Brazil’s concrete steps towards its national and international commitments for biodiversity conservation and restoration through 2030.

B Brazilian authorities stressed that reducing habitat loss is crucial to addressing biodiversity scarcity and the efforts of climate change.
