San Juan, Argentina | Inaugurated the New San Juan Domingo Faustino Sarmiento International Airport Terminal

A historic day was lived on 10th December 2025 in San Juan, a valley city east of the Andes Mountains in west - central Argentina with the inauguration of the new passenger air terminal of the San Juan International Airport "Domingo Faustino Sarmiento" ( UAQ) serving the city and named after Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, the seventh President of Argentina, located in Las Chacritas in the eastern centre of the Túlum Valley oasis within the 9 de Julio Department, 12 kilometres east of the city of San Juan.

The air terminal had been under construction since 2018 with millionaire investment to develop greater capacity to accommodate flights and the possibility of enabling international travel.

The works began seven years ago under the command of Grupo Petersen, a major economic conglomerate that engages in engineering and construction, energy, banking, agribusiness and urban services businesses across Argentina, registering the first brake the following year due to difficulties with the terrain.

The inauguration of the first part of the remodelling took place in 2023, when the work was already under the construction of the Mendoza company, Procon, after the termination of the contract with Grupo Petersen.

The works continued, practically leaving the airport in new condition, with the incorporation of two sleeves that allow four aicraft to operate simultaneously, something never seen before in the province of San Juan.

In addition, works were carried out on the runway and in the parking lot, the installation of a new RX and Immigration control, the expansion of the international boarding area, and the placement of new baggage belts, among other improvements.

The project to complete the terminal, which involved an investment of over $55 million, was managed by Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 and the Argentine government. The new terminal replaces the previous structure and includes significant enhancements:

·       Expanded Infrastructure: The terminal has an expanded surface, a new international boarding area and the capacity to operate four flights simultaneously.

·       Modern Amenities: Key additions include two boarding brisges (jet sleeves) , 12 check - in counters, modern baggage claim belts, new commercial and gastronomic offerings, and renovated parking areas.

·       Operational Improvements: The runway, control tower, and X - ray and migration controls were all part of the upgrade, preparing the airport for increased domestic and international traffic, which has been growing in the region.

·       Seismic Adaptation: The design of the new terminal incorporated key structural adaptations to withstand seismic activity, as San Juan is a high-risk earthquake zone.

This project is part of a larger national plan to upgrade airports across Argentina and aims to boost regional and international connectivity, particularly for the growinng mining and tourism industries.

The official inauguration ceremony took place on the top floor, in the international boarding area, a completely new zone that expect to receive thousands of travellers from different parts of the world. The event was attended by the CEO of Aeropuertos Argentina, Daniel Ketchibachian, who was together with the governor of San Juan's province Marcelo Orrego and other officials.

CEO of Aeropuertos Argentina, Daniel Ketchibachian assured the media present before the official ceremony of the importance of having created an airport of international quality, stating that this development is a work of $55 million, and it is true that it took longer than Aeropuertos Argentina would have liked, but when you see the end it is worth the effort and sacrifice, and today there is an airport that is a total pride.

In addition, the CEO highlighted the importance of increasing capacity, enabling the possibility of boarding four flights simultaneously, the terminal is ready to receive domestic flights, services also tripled with an expansion of gastronomic and tourist facilities.

The Governor of San Juan Province Marcelo Orrego highlighted the importance of having a passenger terminal that is international in nature to expand San Juan's connectivity to the world, not only thinking about tourism but also about all the chances that will enable as of today.
