The EXPO complex in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan located on the banks of Ishim River in the north of the ountry, has been chosen as the site for the country ’s first artificial intelligence university, and will open its doors during the current year.
This was announced by the country’s President Kasim - Yomart Tokayev during a meeting with the staff of the Kazakh National University Al - Farabi, also called KzNU or KazGu, located in Almaty, Kazakhstan ‘s largest metropolis situated in the foothills of the Trans - Ili Alatau mountains.
The President explained that the creation of this new house of studies responds to Kazakhstan’s turn towards the development of science and technology, and he entrusts universities with the mission of training a new generation of citizens.
he university is a key part of the 2026 “Year of Digititalization and AI” aiming to train professionals, support local innovation, and build a strong, independent national AI ecosystem.
Key details about the Upcoming Opening of AI University:
• Location and Phased Launch: The university will be located in the Nur Alem sphere of the Expo complex in Astana, starting with master’s programs in 2026 and expanding to undergraduate degrees in 2028.
• Partnerships and Focus: The insititution will partner with leading international universities (including mentions of MIT, and institutions from the US, UK, and UAE). It will be deeply integrated into the Al - Sana program and the Alem Al centre, focusing on applied research for industries.
• Aim: The university is designed to create a “mental revolution” in Kazakhstan, shifting focus from humanities to technological expertise, creating specialized talent in AI for sectors like education, government, and healthcare.
• National Strategy: The project, initiated by President Kasim – Yomart Tokayev in late 2025, aims to reduce reliance on foreign technology by fostering local AI talent, following the establishments of a dedicated Ministry for AI Development.
• Related Developments: In addition to this flagship institution, Coventry University is also launching a new campus in Almaty in 2026, focusing on AI and engineering, according to the Coventry University website.
