The state has registered up to 1.700 tons of grapes produced, which has allowed it to generate more than 2.000 direct and indirect jobs, more than 1.6 million bottles a year, 130 labels and more than 90% of active projects.
Guanajuato has emerged and established itself as one of Mexico’s most exciting high - altitude wine regions boasting a land that combines mineral - rich soil and a significant day - to - night temperature shift to produce wine with vibrant acidity, structural complexity, and fresh, expressive fruit flavours.
Local vineyards sit at impressive elevations of 1.800 to 2.500 metres above sea level. This altitude combined with a semi - desert climate, exposes the grapes to intense sunlight while the cool nights allow for excellent natural acidity.
These elements and climatic conditions contribute to produce deep, highly aromatic, and structured red wines , as well as crisp and fresh whites.
Rather than being defined by a single signature grape, Guanajuato thrives on diverse experimentation with the production of:
• Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Nebbiolo, Syrah, and Tempranillo.
• Whites: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sémilon.

According to data from the Visitor Profile Study 2024 - 2025 of the SECTURI, the reason for wine tourism travel in Guanajuato represented during that period, 1.1% of visitors to the state, with 264.246 travellers, who generated an economical spill close to 634 million pesos (approximately $17 million) and showing increase of 70% compared to the previous year.
Linked to this promotional initiative and with the aim of boosting furthermore tourism activity in the state for the second half of the year, the Ministry of Tourism of the entity (SECTURI) announced the details of the 2026 Grape Harvest Festival, one of the most anticipated seasons of the year by national and international travellers.
This summer - autumn the season will take place in four municipalities of Guanajuato from August 1 to October 18, projecting to generate a great economic spillover for the region.
