Faro - Portugal | The Algarve City will Charge Tourist Tax all Year Round


Faro, lively and sunny capital of southern Portugal's Algarve region on the Atlantic Ocean next to the Ria Formosa Lagoon, a 170 square kilometres nature reserve, active centre with an economy based on tourism, fishing, and canning industries next to the exportation of cork and fruit and home to the University of the Algarve also highlighted by a rich cultural and historical heritage where the iconic neoclassical Arco da Vila stands out, monumental archway which leads to the suggestive old town with its picturesque cobbled street and where stands the splendid Gothic Cathedral developed in the 13th century will charge tourist tax all year round.

The Portuguese city, which charged a tourist tax of €1.5 in high season, increased this amount to €2.0, extending the measure to the winter months with a lower value, of €1.0.

In high season, in the period from 1st march to 31st October the rate increases by €0.50 and reaches €2.0 per person per night while in low season, from 1st November to the last day of February, a tourist tax of €1.0 is now charged.

The capital and largest centre of Algarve will also increase the minimum age for collecting the tax from 13 to 16 years.

It should be noted that the tourist tax applies to overnight in tourist complexes or local accommodation establishments, located within the geographical area of the municipality of Faro, per night, up to a maximum of seven consecutive nighs per person and per stay.
