Porto, vibrant coastal city in northwest Portugal, the second largest centre in the country after Lisbon, capital of the district with the same name and one of the Iberian Peninsula's major urban areas through its Municipal Chamber is going to raise the tourist tax to €3.0, charged per person and per night.
This increase is intended to be justified by arguing that it corresponds to the increase in expenses associated with tourism in heritage, culture, energy, quality of life, urban planning or mobility.
The increase is expected to come into force in january 2025 and with it, Porto is close in amount to that charged in the most expensive city after the capital of the country Lisbon which leads the ranking where €4.0 are charged.
The Municipal Chamber of Porto highlights that these expenses in 2023, amounted to an expenditure of €15.5 million and if a total of 5.5 million tourists stayed overnight in the city the Chamber spent up to €2.81 per visitor each day.
As a note the Hospitality Association has been critical of this initiative and has rejected this increase, since it loses competitiveness with respect to the nieghbouring towns of Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia where the tourist tax of €2.0 is maintained.
