Korean Air Lines Co., Ltd operating as Korean Air, the flag carrier of South Korea and its largest airline based on fleet size, international destinations and international flights member of SkyTeam and owned by the Hanjin Group complied with all the conditions established by the European Union's competition authority for its merger with the company Asiana Airlines, formerly Seoul Airlines, the second major South Korean airline and member of the global airline alliance Star Alliance.
The European Commission announced that is had completed its review after confirming that Korean Air met all the conditions required for the merger with Asiana Airlines.
Already in February 2024, the commission granted conditional approval subject to two key requirements such as ensuring the stable operations of a medicine carrier on four overlapping European routes which include Barcelona, Frankfurt, Paris and Rome and the divestment of Asiana's cargo business.
Korean Air has designated T'way Air as the resource airline for the European routes, committing to provide operational support, including aircraft, flight crew and maintenance services.
An alternagtive airline in an airline merger is a company that receives non – discriminatory access to the merged airline's content through indirect distribution channels.
This allows consumers to compare the offerings of the merged airlines with those of competitors, which can help smaller airlines attract consumers.
For now the two brands will continue to operate separately, but the plan involves the total disappearance of Asiana Airlines.
Korean Air and Asiana Airlines also have low cost branches, the first has Jin Air while the second has Air Busan and Air Seoul and the plan is for Jin Air to absorb both Air Busan and Air Seoul.
This merger will also mean that the combined airline will be part of Skyteam Alliance and that Asiana Airlines will leave Star Alliance.
