Arequipa – Peru | Country's First Smart Tourist Destination

 

Arequipa, region and department in southwestern Peru, divided in 8 provinces and 107 districts, well known for its colonian charm, splendid buildings made of white volcanic stones, a delicious cuisine, with a captivating territory characterized by heavy layers of lava covering large areas of its inter - Andean sector and deep canyons such has the ones formed by the Majes and Ocoña Rivers and the Colca Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world will be the country's first smart destination.

Mincetur, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism began the implementation of a pilot project to turn Arequipa region into the first DTI, Intelligent Tourist Destination in Peru an ambitious and transformative project that will mark the beginning of a new era in the country's tourism management.

It should be noted that a smart tourist destination stands out for having avant - garde technological infrastructure, having accessible routes, facilitating the interaction and integration of travellers with the environment and contributing to improving the experience of national and international tourists and of course also a notable quality of life of its own inhabitants.

The Minister Desilú León, said that it is a honour and a privilege to share with everyone this historic moment for tourism in Peru declaring that that the smart tourist destinations not only improve the visitor experience but they also contribute to a more sustainable, responsible and balanced tourism, in which the benefits are distributed fairly among all the actors involved.

It is important to note that this effort has the technical support of the Mercantile Society for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies, SEGITTUR of Spain, an international entity of great prestige that have been key in the promotion and development of Smart Tourist Destinations around the world, endorsed by UN Tourism, World Tourism & Council,  European Capital of Smart Tourism, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, OECD and IDB, the Inter - American Development Bank.

The Ministry also pointed out that Arequipa with its cultural, historical and natural wealth is ready to become a benchmark in Peru demonstrating that tourism can be a source of economic and social development, as long as it kis based on the principles of innovation, sustainability and accessibility.

This pilot project has a duration of two years, during which it applies a methodology for Arequipa to obtain the adhered recognition of Smart Tourist Destination, which will serve to achieve the international certification by SEGITTUR and be officially recognized as a DTI. an Intelligent Tourist Destination.

The time may vary depending on the level of commitment and implementation capacity of regional and local governments and other actors involved.

The process involves all public, private and academic institutions within the jurisdiction of the destination, in addition to the local community and the initiative seeks to promote the installation of technological infrastructure and public - private cooperation with the aim of consolidating the city as a leading destination in innovative tourism and in addition to improving and diversifying the tourist offer of Arequipa region increasing visits by national and international citizens.
