The rural parish of Baquerizo Moreno is small centre in Ecuador, located 30 minutes from Pillaro, a town capital of a canton with the same name in the Tungurahua province situated in the centre of the Inter - Andean Region of the country, very close to the geometric centre of the Ecuadorian territory, on the flanks of the eastern Andean mountain range and on the slopes of the Patate River, boasting a conservation area located at more than 3.700 metres of altitude, a natural paradise with more than 300 species of flora and fauna in the heart of the Andes.
Since 2019 Baquerizo Moreno boasts a conservation and sustainable use area, a 406 - hectare space which was cataloged by the Ministry of the Environment as a water protection area in 2023, a land which has a humid mountain climate that borders on 23 degrees Celsius boasting a very exuberant diversity.
Through several studies, it was possible to identify in the conservation area various species of birds such as Andean toucans, woodpeckers, turtledoves, blackbirds, among others that coexist with tapirs, ocelots, porcuspines and spectacled bears, the latter symbol of the parish.
Rosana Álvarez, part of the Parish Government of Baquerizo Moreno, said that through photos trapping, that is, placement of camera traps in the forest, the registration and identification of different species has been achieved, which are constantly monitored.
Meanwhile, as far as the flora is concerned, you can find a wide variety of orchids, mortiño plants, part of the Ericaceae family native to the Andes that has been used by local communities for centuries, mosses, bromeliads, hualicones, achupallas, among others that are still to be discovered.
In addition to the exuberant flora and fauna in the conservation area is also possible to visit three stunning waterfalls, the first is La Toma with a height of 20.0 metres, later, half a kilometre away, the next waterfall called El Pugse is located, which has a rocky wall of 30.0 metres and finally the Cañon Bravo with a fall of 60.0 metres.
Within the conservation area visitors can take tourist tours, always when they enter accompanied by an expert guide and knowledgeable about the area.
At the moment the Parish Government is working on the implementation of a large group of guides committed to nature, likewise is planned to enable RMC, scientific tourism tours.
Rosana Álvarez indicates that to walk through this space delimited for tourism is recommended to go with trekking shoes or rubber boots, as well as comfortable clothes for walking and hydration.
To get to Baquerizo Moreno :
• By car - You can take the Ambato – Pillaro road and then the Pillaro - Patate road passing through Emilio María Terán ultil you reach the centre of the parish in a trip endures approximately 40 minutes.
• By bus - It is also possible to reach the Parish by taking a bus from Ambato bus station to the Pillaro Terminal and right there by taking another bus to Baquerizo Moreno in an approximate time of an hour and a half.
