Playa del Carmen, famed resort city locaded along the Yucatán Peninsula’s Riviera Maya strip of Caribbean shoreline in the southeastern Mexican state of Quintana Roo, known for its long, palm - lined beaches, coral reefs, famous resorts and vibrant nighlife has the aspiration to be known separately from Riviera Maya, as a complete destination by itself.
The local Secretary of Tourism, Estefania Hernández, said that the destination has been strengthened after two years of challenges, positioning itself again as a jewel of the Mexican Caribbean.
With more than 45.000 hotel rooms available, the municipality works in close coordination with the private sector to ensure not only a high influx of visitors, but also an economic spillover that benefits urban and rural communities and thel local Secretary said that Playa del Carmen wants tourist spending to stay in the region and strengthen its local economy.
Playa del Carmen works hard with various initiatives, campaigns, strategic plans and aware of the need to diversify furthermore the tourist offer.
The local authorities are developing new thematic routes that go beyond the traditional beach tourism, among them there are the Honey Route, the Jungle Route, Urban Art, Sea Tourism, and ecological cycling tours, among others.
The Head of Tourism of Playa del Carmen said that the idea is to offer a complete agenda that includes culture, sports, enhancing its image and appeal and offering unique experiences that differentiate Playa del Carmen as destination.
As part of its international positioning strategy, the municipality is advancing in the project of building its own identity and it wants it to stop being just the heart of the Riviera Maya and be recognized as a complete destination by itself.
In this sense, relevant urban works are being developed, such as the Founders Park, which will incorporate signage and urban design aligned with the city brand, as well as new scenic viewpoints such as the Mirador del Mar, and a monumental welcome arch, which will serve as an emblem of entry for visitors.
In addition before the arrival of sargassum, the municipal government has already activated the alert traffic light and is working together with Zofemat, the Federal Maritime - Terrestrial Zone in Mexico, a coastal area under federal jurisdiction that requires specific regulations and protection due to its ecological and economic ikmportance to mitigate the effects of this natural contingency.
The Secretary of Tourism stated that Sargassum does not stop Playa del Carmen that is more than a beach, the destination boasts cenotes, gastronomic routes, cultural and adventure activities that continue to be very attractive for many tourists.
