Crete, the largest and most populous of the Greek islands located about 100 kilometres south of the Pelopponese, divided into four administrative regions or prefecture, a very demanded destination for its amcient history, idyllic beaches and a delicious cuisine is taking very significant steps to safeguard and promote its relevant intangible cultural heritage through the creation of a dedicated Regional Intangible Cultural Heritage Registry.
The Region of Crete in line with the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, a treaty adopted by the UNESCO General Conference on 17th October 2003 which aims to safeguard cultural practices, expressions, knowledge and know - how that is transmitted from generation to generation within communities created a Registry that aims to capture and celebrate the island's unique traditions, social customs, and cultural expressions that form the heart of Cretan identity.
The Registry, serving as an official repository, will document a wide array of intangible heritage elements, from oral traditions like myths and folk take the vibrant and unique music, dance, and theatrical performances.
In addition, the Registry will preserve social practices, rituals, festive celebrations, traditional knowledge linked to nature and resource management, artisanal crafts, and even local games.
The success of this initiative not only showcases the rich historical and cultural heritage of Crete Region but also hinges on the active involvement of local communities and cultural stakeholders to ensure every distinctive aspect of Crete's heritage is recorded and honoured.
To raise awareness and engage both the public and cultural organizations, the Region of Crete in partnership with the Ministry of Culture's Directorate for Modern Cultural Heritage and the educational company "Ploigos" , a civil nonprofit organisation located in Heraklion, will host a series of events on 31st May and 1st June 2025.
These gatherings, taking place at the Atlantis Hotel in Heraklion and Thrasano in the Municipality of Minoa Pediados, located 25 km southeast of Knossos, will present the Registry and its role in preserving Crete's living cultural legacy.
