Nuevo León, Mexico | Leading Destination for Meetings and Events in Latin America

Nuevo León, a state situated in northeastern Mexico, one of the areas of Latin America with the highest human development, boasting a rich historical and cultural heritage, a land highlighted by diverse landscapes as the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range, gentle hills along the Rio Grande River, and its vast coastal plains along the Northern Gulf is not only consolidating itself as a tourist destination for adventure and nature but  it is also elevating its position as a leading destination for meetings and events in Latin America.

Last year alone, this sector generated in the state a remarkable economic spillover of 3.0 billion pesos, equivalent to a growth of 7.14% compared to 2023 where the impact was 2.800 million pesos, and for the current year it is expected to contribute 3.500 million pesos, that is an increase of 16%.

The Secretary of Tourism of Nuevo León, Maricarmen Martinez Villareal stressed that to achieve this growth the result is due to strategic alliances with the Monterrey Convention and OCV Monterrey Visitors Bureau to attract major events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Secretary stated that this segment of tourism represents a concrete opportunity for the state of Nuevo León, because it activates the value chain, promotes economic development and strengthens the national and international projections.

During this past 2024, the state received approximately 3.2 million tourists, of which 40% corresponded to the business tourism segment.

There are many associations that have to do with attracting events, then, thanks to this join effort, and for that Nuevo León is consolidating itself as a very relevant venue for large events with infrastructure, connectivity and high - altitude services.

The Director of the Tourism Trust, David Manllo Valdés, said that events such as the World Cup require years of work, which is achieved thanks to the participation of 50% of the public sector and 50% of the private sector within the organization.

The Director also highlighted that the state is going to have the largest event in the world in the city and the expectation is to receive around 600.000 to 800.000 people during these 39 days of the World Cup. For this top event the state is preparing to have everything ready in terms of mobility, security and all the services that are required such as car rental, everything that is transportation and hospitality.

Like the World Cup, the state of Nuevo León confirming its position as a leading destination for meetings and events will host the World Football Summit, Fundiexpo GIFA Mexico, AHR Expo Mexico, the General Convention of the Apostolic Church of the Faith in Christ Jesus, as well as congresses of Ophthalmology, Nutrition, Dermatology, and Urban Transportation, among others.

The Director of the Tourism Trust stressed that the meeting industry due to the generation of events in the state regulates seasonality, since even Nuevo León has a better average hotel stay than Cancun.

Among the competitive advantages offered by the Mexican state in this sector are the 64 direct destinations, 130 hotels with 17.500 rooms, 3 Convention and Exhibition Centres, sports venues, Fundidora Park, activities and tourist attractions and a large variety of suppliers that all together elevate Nuevo León as a leading destination for meetings and events.
