Jakarta, Indonesia | Developing 267 Microparks as Part of its Drive to Become a Greener Global City

Jakarta, Indonesia’s massive capital located on the northwest coast of the island of Java, bustling political, economic, and cultural heart of the country, known for its historic and vibrant mix of cultures including Javanese, Malay, Chinese, Arab and European that influenced its architecture, language and cuisine, significant landmarks like the National Monument (Monas), rich history as the Dutch colonial Batavia,  incredible shopping and diverse food scene is developing 267 microparks as part of its drive to become a greener, global city.

 The initiative is part of Governor Pramono Anung’s priority agenda, focused on solving major urban challenges as reported by Antara, news agency that delivers real time information on various events from Indonesia and around the world.

The development of these microparks is part of a larger push by Jakarta to improve its urban environment which faces significant challenges including severe traffic congestion, pollution and the fact that parts of the city are rapidly sinking due to excessive groundwater extraction.

This initiative will also contribute to improving air circulation, natural lighting, reducing high temperatures, health risks and raising living standards.

The city has also planned a program focused on the recovery of 32 kilometres of mangrove areas and the planting of 500.000 trees in its metropolitan area, and in addition is prioritizing the creation of green spaces in informal settlements, as well as the incorporation of vegetations under viaducts and bridges.

The Indonesian capital aims to expand green open space to 10% of its area by 2030 and achieve global - city status rooted in history, culture, and innovation by June, 22, 2027, and seeking to strengthen collaboration between public and private organizations to promote sustainable urban development.

In addition to all that the city is actively working to improve its transportation network, increasing the fleet of electric buses, expanding new maritime routes and regulations for sustainable and energy - efficient building are being developed.
