Bestari Jaya, Malaysia | Construction Has Begun on the Country’s Largest Floating Solar Power Project

Construction has begun on Malaysia’s largest floating solar project in Bestari Jaya, a town and a mukim in Kuala Selangor District within the state of  Selangor, the country’s most developed state encircling the capital Kuala Lumpur on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia featuring a mix of high - tech industrial hubs, urban cities like Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya and rich natural landscapes, with the launch of ceremony, meeting the energy needs of 150.000 households.

Set to be Malaysia’s largest and one of Southeast Asia’s biggest upon completion in July 2027, this major project with a capacity of 300 megawatts, will cover about 430 hectares of land belonging to state entities, the project repurposes abandoned mining pits, utilizing a 21 - year power purchase agreement (PPA) to support Malaysia’s 40% renewable energy by 2035.

The power purchase agreement was signed in March 2025 with the aim of supplying renewable energy stably to the national grid.

More than 80% of the facility will use floating solar technology, taking advantage of existing water reservoirs without requiring extensive land use.

The project will incorporate modern technologies to preserve water quality, including oxygenation and algae control systems.

In addition to generating electricity the development is expected to boost Selangor’s green economy by attracting investment, supporting industrial and commercial activities, repurposing mining areas, creating opportunities for local businesses and strengthening the renewable sector value chain.

Key Features and Details of the Project

•    Capacity and Impact: The facility is designed to generate approximately 640.000 MWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power more than 150.000 households.
•    Location: Situated in Bestari Jaya, Kuala Selangor, the project utilizes former mining land, avoiding the need for productive land.
•    Developers: The project is developed by a consortium involving Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd, Worldwide Holdings Berhad, and Rotaka Engineering Services Sdn Bhd.
•    Construction Timeline: Construction is expected to take roughly 20 months, with commissioning aimed for July 2027.
•    Sustainability: Developed under the LSS5 program, it aligns with Selangor’ s goal to strengthen its green economy.
•    Safety and Tech: The project adheres to strict safety and equipment standards, exceeding those of typical land – based projects.
