In Debre Birhan, a centre located in the Semien Shewa Zone of Ahmara Region in central Ethiopia, about 120 kilometres north east of Addis Ababa, situated on Ethiopian highway 2 at an elevation of 2.840 metres, which makes it the highest town in Africa, highlighted by a cool highland climate, a historical significance as a former royal retreat, traditional markets, ancient churches like Debre Birhan Selassie, hiking, local crafts, a growing role as an industrial/investment hub, with nearby Entoto Hills providing nature access, making it a blend of cultural heritage and modern development and 14 factories were opened creating more than 36.000 jobs.
The factories which include Nixon Pulp Factory, Baja Ceramic Factory, Agro Industries and Car assembly plan have begun operating, marking an important advance in the expansion of the industry, production unitis that have created more than 36.000 jobs for local residents, according to Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a leading Ethiopian media organization formed through the merger odf the former Fana Broadcasting Corporate S.C. and Walta Media.
The start of the activities coincided with an inspection visit led by the Industrial Development Council, which aimed to assess the progress of the factories.
The delegation that visited the industrial sites was composed of government representatives, including the Minister of Agriculture, Addisu Arega, and other officials.
The visit began with the inspection of the paper and ceramic mills. In the next visits, it is planned to inspect other production units, such as agricultural companies and automobile assembly factories.
Experts underline the relevance of these factories for the economic growth of the region and state, and the operational capacity of these companies reflects the growing role of Debre Birhan in strengthening Ethiopia’s economy.
The Ethiopian government is focusing heavily on industrial parks and light manufacturing to boost its economy, attract foreign investment, and tackle unemployment. This effort is part of a larger plan to create 5.6 million jobs in the 2025/2026 fiscal year through both domestic enterprise support asnd expanded overseas employment opportunities.
