Naustdal-Norway | Great Førdefjord Views in an Uncontaminated Nature.



Naustdal is one of the several, shining beauties present in Norway, a centre which offers great Førdefjord views in Sogn og Fjordane County, part of the district of Sunnfjord, a must during a trip to that enchanting Nordic country visiting and exploring one of the most attractive corners of the entire Scandinavian Peninsula thanks to a stupendous scenery transmitting the most sublime feelings facing a land where nature is an outstanding protagonist including in its most remote corners.

That pleasant town located at approximately at 190,0 kilometres north of Bergen, the second city of the country behind the capital Oslo on the shore of  the river Nausta, lies in a fantastic geographic position on the road between Førde located just 13,0 kilometres away and Flora famous for its fishing industry and  its Troll connected by the Naustadal Tunnel opened on 18th August 1995 with a length of 5970,0 metres.
 
The official municipality was established in the late 19th century and nowadays with its approximately 2,600 inhabitants also composed by two fractions called Helle and Indrevevring it is one of those fascinating Norwegian centres wrapped by a magnificent natural environment with the presence of  large uncontaminated forest, another superb attraction of that Scandinavian Eden.


You can easily reach in a short time from Nautsdal some charming peaks situated immediately to east of the municipal boundaries, captivating wild, heights such as the Sandhornet and Blåfjellet, mountains with an altitude of approximately 1,400 metres dominating the entire local scene, great places to to immortalise in a multitude of  pictures that magic dreamland with astonishing images ready to make without hesitations a huge poster. 

Not far you can visit tiny scenic villages, small picturesque towns such as Gloppen, Gaular, Askvoll, Holmedal, Fjaler, Jølster, striking wild streams surrounded by an endless verdant woodland and at less than two hours driving you can reach easily the unique, unforgettable Sognefjord, that long striking sea arm highlighting the splendid town of Kaupanger, another fascinating territory inviting every visitor to stay hours and hours in eternal contemplation.

The beauty of that town is a great combination of everything very inviting for long walks, excursions discovering an unspoilt environment along scenic paths leading to picturesque hills and naturally the presence of the Førrdefjord with its 36,0 kilometres in length, emblematic landmark of that site is a great occasion to admire Norway in all its splendour.
  

All those infinite marvels inserted in a stunning frame of on uncontaminated environment are also a great habitat for many outdoor activities such as cycling on road, mountain bike, trekking, salmon fishing, horse riding, Nordic and  Adventure skiing in winter and much more.


You will enjoy in addition some centres boasting a notable historic, cultural patrimony, the communications are excellent, no noise or traffic, the local Tourism Boards work very well offering you all the information you need to plan your itineraries with specific, significant routes day by day depending of your tastes and preferences.

In Naustadal you can find a good range of cottages and houses very confortable, not far from that town there are excellent Hotels in Førde, all structures situated in magnificent corners delighting your view twenty four hours a day. 

The locals are very kind and you can enjoy a delicious, healthy, genuine cuisine with an ample, homemade gastronomic offer and also those details are undoubtedly greatly appreciated by many visitosr.

The history as official municipality is pretty young, it was for long a time part of Førde but a clever Norwegian  plan of organisation to create in a long but not very populated country some new agglomerations improving the system of transport and the connections in a territory packed by fjords and rivers to cross more developed centres,operations which could overcome those natural obstacles and barriers becoming points of references along those new established routes.

The current centre born 1st January 1896 with the incorporation of the nearest Indrevevring and some very small hamlets scattered in proximity of the Førdefjord.

The name of Naustdal derives from Nausta the local river and Dale which in modern Norwegian language means valley, the denomination of that waterway is from the name of an old farm called Nausstdalr which translated means boathouse, an image which appears in three unities in the coat of arms of the town next to gables.

The captivating local core is an agglomeration of picturesque, wooden houses on the shore of  the Fjord highlighted by the banks of a splendid, fascinating harbour mainly developed around its Parish Church situated north of the river.

Tunavegen is an important road corresponding to the main artery flanking that Religious building on its west side continuing towards south where it meets Gamlevegen, a long coastal artery running alongside  the harbour.
 
Jaera is another important street immediately south facing the captivating Gronøyra Peninsula situated in front of the town forming another, beautiful, local natural attraction where the Nausta gently embraces the Førdefjord.

The municipality is flanked in its immediate outskirts by Naustdal Stranda or Sanden Beach, a splendid, sandy stretch with a length of approximately 1,5 kilometres providing a marina, diving tower, a beach volley place idal site for all those who love those activities but also perfect to enjoy peace and serenity contemplating magnificent landscapes.
  
The presence of a panoramic path which is an ideal hallway have pleasant walks anytime admiring a magnificent, green Nordic vegetation and  mountains overlooking that fabulous site is another highlight of that centre.

Although not very big Naustdal has a good number of interesting places to visit apart the beauty of its natural setting which is in its kind a monumentall attraction. 

You can start from Naustdal Kyrkje,  the main Religious building erected in 1891 by a talented architect from Oslo called Adolf Schirmer, son of of a famous German born architect named Heinrich Ernst Schirmer very active all around Norway.

That Sacred Temple developed on a large rectangular plan with a high facade beneath a large, scenic gray gable roof is a typical, wooden building boasting very interesting, architectural  lines  with a series of windows placed on the walls and two small blocks forming annexed structures to its inferior side corresponding to the space on which was established the apse.

The bell tower consists in a polygonal construction formed by two sections with the upper placed on a hexagonal base with a terminal consisting in a gray, long spire topped by a cross and that Religious complex is flanked by the local cemetery established on its left side.

In the town you will have the opportunity to visit a very interesting Museum dedicated to the history of Air Wars during the Second World War, The Air Combat Museum.evoking a famous air battle between German and British aircraft which took place over Sunnfjord on 9th February 1945.
 
Norway in that period was occupied by Germany despite it was a neutral country, the Germans installed in proximity of Naustdal a pretty big navy headquarter hosting several warships to control those coasts of the North Sea but with the intention furthermore to prepare military operations of attack against Great Britain.

Protagonists of that event were the German Luftwaffe, the Kriegsmarine, the Navy Army of the Third Reich and the  RAF the British Royal Air Force highlighting a clash in that geographic point of Northern Europe which entered in the history and well known as "Black Friday".

That exhibition unique in its kind offers the chronological summary of that notorious event including the opportunity to see some rests, pieces, different kinds of objects of the military aeroplanes which participated.

The muserum displays a collection of old maps, documents, pictures and models of those warplanes illustrating furthermore in a detailed reproduction the strategies in a more than interesting step by step depicting all what happened in the largest battle in Norwegian skies.

That famed Black Friday for many historian experts apart the final epilogue it is considered highly interesting for many aspects, starting from the preliminaries, plans of attack from one side and operations of defence from another, strategies of counteroffensives from both sides, research of spaces where the enemy could show its weakness and  much more.

The British Bristol Beaufghters fighters and the German Fokker Wullf F-190 challenged each other in a long dispute writing a historic page which captured the attention of many eminent historians and passionate readers and in that clash five German and ten allied planes were shout down, 16 pilots lost their lives, 

.If you are fond of history closely related to battles which took place during the Second World War or you want to know more about all that ,the museum is very suggested offering you a unique opportunity to know and learn more.

Continuing the visit in the village of Vevring you can admire Vevring Kyrkje, a Church situated in the erected in 1846 by the architect Hans Linstow who also designed the Royal Palace of Oslo. (In the case you are interested I wrote a post about the Norwegian Capital)

That religious building was elevated on an irregular rectangular base, it is a compact white, wooden construction with  a gable roof flanked by a strong square bell tower  surmounted by a traditional thin metallic Nordic pinnacle and on the walls of thae Ecclesiastic complex was placed a line of symmetrical wide, rectangular windows.  

That Sacred temple was restored in a couple of occasions in the 40's immediately after the Second War and in another occasion in the 80's due some deteriorations, excellent works of refurbishment which gave the structure a very well preserved aspect.

The river Nausta is another local highlight for its beauty and spectacular course of about 36,0 kilometres taking  its source from the Inste Langevatnet, a lake situated at 1,390,0 metres of altitude.

 With a watershed area of 277,0 square kilometres it is very famous for salmon fishing, in 2005 it was declared the best in the Sogn of Fjordane and in the 19th position in the national ranking.

That geographic  area is considered among the best in the entire country for that kind of activity in one the favourite by many Norwegian people for the size and weight of that kind of fish.

Salmons are present in many places along that watercourse, they travel for approximately 12,0 kilometres upstream from the river mouth, some very big are numerous in the picturesque Naustdal fossen small waterfalls where you can often see from an old bridge many of them jumping or climbing those beautiful cascades.


They are also present in a big quantity in the fjord due to they cross the entire valley reaching during their trips that long sea arm penetrating in the mainland. 

Apart that kind of iconic fish all the surroundings of Naustdal are famous for trouts of big size,  some people often have caught some species having a weight around 5,0 kilos, a perfect site for that it is also  Ovefoss consisting in another group waterfalls.

The local fish is very appreciated in all the Norwegian markets for its high quality because it is living in fresh waters totally uncontaminated, very demanded by vendors of the country but also exported abroad.

If you are fond of that activity it is possible to hire boats practising that activity on both waterways or visiting the Russenes Tur og Fiske, special Instutitions managed by Rental Agents who by boat trips will bring you in the best places for fishing.

In the nearest lakes you can also find char while on the nearest North Sea, you can find species which boast a high reputation in that area are cod, mackerel, saithe, sea trout, herring,the latter is since the Middle Ages  in the previous centuries one of the main local resources of the country.

The wonderful Førdefjord occupies a vast part of the municipality, it is undoubtedly one of the most scenic attractions of Naustdal, a marvel which delights the view of every visitor alongside its about 36,000 metres of longitude making it the longest of all the fjords in the district of Sunnfjord.

Its maximum width  is approximately 2,0 kilometres, along its course there are several scenic places, its innermost poin in the town of Førde from which takes its name near the estuary of the Jølstra river which flows from the lake Jølstravatnet is one but also its marvellous is its split between the Stavfjorden and the Brufjorden before to reach the North Sea.

In proximity of Vavring you will be delighted by a section where the course is narrower and the view is absolutely great, from there you can enjoy a spectacular, panoramic view towards the southern coast facing the village of Kvammen which lies on a jagged, picturesque headland flanked by a spectacular small gulf which divides that tip from another promontory.

The divine bay in proximity of Flokenes is another attraction where that sea arm runs along a magnificent, rounded peninsula while Nautsdal lies on a splendid straight perfect to see many ot those wonderful images.

The beauty of that marine wonder is absolute protagonist offering striking panoramic views with an unforgettable horizon forming a scenery unique in its kind combined to that virgin, intact nature flanking it.

The reflections of the sun ray lights generate stunning, astonishing images anytime but especially at sunset when the shades of the mountains fall on those waters meeting the sun creating a unique, unforgettable image,  impressive charming post card of Scandinavia to keep with you forever.

Another special feature is all what there is around consisting in several, picturesque forests, a spectacular frame  representing the incomparable beauty of that Nation, a a place delighting all nature lovers.

I suggest you to reach by E39 motorway via Gloppen, another fabulous fjord highly spectacular called Dalsfjord, it is approximately 43,0 kilometres long and the formation of that waterway  is very special, a further, incomparable attraction in its kind.. 

Its first section is very narrow and it is wonderful to admire its image along its course flanked by enchanting high, mountains which give that sea arm a wild aspect in some points with the two shores very close each other forming a channel dominated by giant, majestic walls.

In the stretch  towards  the North Sea you will admire a wide opening with another spectacular view consisting in different islands and islets facing the coast.

The Russenes are another attraction developed not a long time ago consisting in recreational grounds in proximity of the inlet Ålesundet where along footpaths you can find indications, information for places where to fish, excursions, cultural, historic routes, swimming and bird watching.

About the latter, in that area  you can see many kind of volatiles, a Mecca for ornithologists with  the superb opportunity to admire shag, puffin, guillemot, hawk, kittiwake and Northern Fulmar among others.

That geographic area is also the perfect habitat of species of mammals such as deer, red deer, elk, fox, marten, wolwerine, otter and the iconic presence of reindeer, a symbol of the local fauna.

In the case you are a passionate, photographes with the desire to immortalise those animals all the territory around Naustdal is a perfect place to enjoy all that.

All the local territory offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, not only fishing but it is possible to enjoy trekking, mountain bike cycling on road and many opportunities to practise rowing and kayak.

In the surroundings you can have the opportunity to have days of alternative tourism  visiting some farms which kept the old tradition to breed horses and due to that it is a very suggested area for horse riding another activity enjoying in another way the beauty of that uncontaminated land.
 
The best periods to visit that area are late spring, all summer, you will enjoy mild temperatures with fresh evenings, great seasons where the fantastic Norwegian nature shows all its fascination.

Also early autumn is a pleasant period to admire the change of colours of nature while winter is very indicated for all those who loves Nordic skiing, especially skiing Cross Country and obviously also to spend a lovely stay with a cultural tourism.

Great is to rent a lovely cottage very suggested for families, couples small group of friends living 100% Norway in those accommodations situated in fairytale places..I added some links below if you are planning your future holidays in that heaven with some information about that too.

Local cuisine is superb with a wide variety of excellent fish dishes with famed salmon definitely protagonist prepared in different styles as grilled but also baked with the delicious smoked variant as great highlight

Another preparation of that kind of fish is marinated giving origin to  the famous Gravet laks. while Herring and trout  also play an important role prepared in different styles such as with sauces, marinated, boiled, both very appreciated for their special taste and high quality.

You can also taste an excellent quality of beef, pork, deer and reindeer casseroles and among them some of the most typical local plates, very famous is  the reindeer stew and the roast deer

The several forests offer a big quantity of berries and lingo berries used to prepare jams, cakes and many other recipes related to the local pastry and bakery.

Naustdal is nature, beautiful landscapes, history and in a small town like that you can breathe the typical, traditional, genuine Norwegian atmosphere because every corner is simply spectacular in an Eden which offers a multitude proposals for a very active, complete tourism..

Despite Førde has its airport situated at just 30, 0 kilometres of distance from Naustdal the best option to reach that site by Continental flights is landing on Bergen Lufthavn, Flesland Airport situated at 215,0 kilometres.

From that city in less than four hours driving you will be at destination by E39 Motorway in a magnificent panoramic journey highlighted by stunning fjords, wonderful wild streams which will accompany you with striking images towards that enchanting place.

Visiting Norway is extremely beautiful, apart the most famed places, important cities and towns, there are also smaller places as Naustdal offering the visitors a multitude of flashing attractions. 

All there is absolutely magic, the presence of the divine Førdefjord with its spectacular, great views in an uncontamined nature which make that place unique and more than captivating will be your golden haven for unforgettable holidays.
