The Ministry of Tourism of Cantabria, autonomous community and province in northern Spain after the Spanish government in 1984 ordered the closure of the Santander – Mediterranean railway line is at least making progress in the recovery for tourist use of the Yera station located at the Cantabrian northern exit of the La Engaña tunnel project near the village of Vega de Pas, which linked that province with that of Burgos in the community of Castilla y León.
The Ministry of Tourism is going to advance in the rehabilitation of the warehouse and outdoor area of the station building, with a park - and - ride car park equipped with 40 spaces.
The General Director of Tourism Gustavo Cubero reported that this station located in the Pas - Miera Region geographically located between the valleys of the Pas River and its tributaries, the Pisueña and the Magdalena as well as the headwaters of the Miera River valley is going to become a tourist hostel with 60 places as for the warehouse, it will be transformed into a Visitor Center, with the idea that the history of the railway line that would link the city of Santander with the port of Sagunto in the community of Valencia, will be shown there.
The General Director pointed out that the intention is to attract visitors to Pasiego Valleys, but also to create wealth and fix population in area at risk of depopulation.
It is estimated that the duration of the works, will cover about 14 months, so the new complex could be inaugurated on the horizon of 2026.
