Portugal | Portuguese Equestrian Art, Named as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO

Ecuestrian art in Portugal boasts a long history and relevant traditions stretching back to the times of the Royal Stables, with protagonist the equestrian academy of the 18th century, establishing a sense of harmony and deep respect between rider and horse, with the rider communicating with the horse to encourage its willing collaboration, without the use of force,  a practice that is therefore based on respect for the animal and its well - being and all that continues today at the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, based in the Garden of the National Palace of Queluz, a centre within Sintra municipality, on the Portuguese Riviera, in the Lisbon metropolitan area of Portugal.

For all that and more the equestrian art in Portugal has been named as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the responsible committee of UNESCO.

The approval of the candidacy of the Portuguese Ecuestrian Art took place on 3rd December within the framework of the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asunción - Paraguay.

Promoted in collaboration by the Portuguese Association of Lusitano Thoroughbread Breeders, by Parques de Sintra which manages the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art and by the municipality of Golegã, the application process for the Portuguese Equestrian Art began in 2015 and in 2021 it was included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In the application documents submitted to UNESCO, it is stated the promoters proposed as measures to safeguard Portuguese equestrian art, the creation of a research centre associated with the D. Diogo de Braganca Equestrian Library, in the National Palace of Queluz, the guarantee of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art as a reference institution in teaching,  and the integration of horseback riding as a complement to the school curriculum, based on an existing pilot project in Golegã among others.

In the same document it is highlighted that this practice is based on respect for the horse and the establishment of a perfect harmony with the riders.

The artistic dimension of the practice is also highlighted, detailing that in all its dimensions, the Equestrian Art in Portugal is differentiated by the position of the rider in the saddle, the specific clothing and the harness

The rider develops equestrian knowledge, seeking a friendly collaboration with the horse, pampering him without forcing with the animal that brilliantly intuites what is asked him.
