Peloponnese, Greece | Unveiled a New 2.000 Kilometres Trail Network to Boost Sustainable Tourism

Peloponnese, a peninsula and geographic region in Southern Greece, and the southernmost region of the Balkans, connected to the Hellenic mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth where the Corinth Canal was constructed in 1893, a land of a unique beauty, highlighted by archaeological sites, picturesque villages, ancient monasteries, alluring castles amidst stunning natural beauty, mountains, large forests,  rivers and caves unveiled a new 2.000 kilometres trail network to boost sustainable tourism.

The Peloponnese Trails form a key part of the region's strategy to showcase nature and gastronomy as central elements of an enriched tourism offering, designed to support local communities and boost the economy.

The initiative was originally introduced in November 2024 as part of the Environment Ministry's "Creation of a National Network of Paths and Hiking Routes" project, to promote sustainable development and cultural and nature - based tourism.

This trails network covering more than 2.000 kilometres is designed to create routes with storytelling such as history, nature, and gastronomy, while connecting them to local products and services and at the same time entering in deep connection with the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Peloponnese.

In addition, the network will serve as a relevant educational tool in training programs for tourism professionals, promoting modern tourism practices and supporting the growth of rural and local economies.

During the inauguration ceremony which took place in Dimitsana, attractive mountain village and a former municipality in Arcadia, Pelopponese, the Governor Dimitrid Ptochos emphasized that the trails are a flagship initiative, fully aligned with the principles of thematic tourism and sustainable development.

The trails serve as a platform for the destination's revitalization and represent an investment in enhancing the quality and long-term appeal of the Pelopponese.

Secretary General of the GNTO, the Greek National Tourism Organization, Andreas Florentinos, during a panel discussion presented the network's key features, noting that it is fully aligned with the board's strategy to showcase the Pelopponese's diverse tourism offerings.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, stated that this project is an emblematic initiative that enhances, protects, strengthens, and highlights something central to the identity o the Peloponnese's people with their deep connection to the landscape, nature, and history of the region.
