Chile's Government has unveiled a national highway project investing $594 million in sustainable infrastructure, featuring the comprehensive improvement of a 126 - kilometres stretch between Chachao and Chonchi on the Route 5 in Chiloé, the largest island of the Chiloé Archipelago off the coast off Chile, in the Pacific Ocean, part of the Los Lagos Region, introducing an unprecedented measure in the South American country with seven specialized bridges up to 25 metres wide to act as wildlife corridors designed to allow the safe crossing of wild animals and reduce the impact of the highway on ecosystems.
These crossings enable safe movement for native species, preventing road accidents and reducing habitat fragmentation is a move that is part of a larger push toward ecological connectivity in the region.
The initiative seeks to reconcile the improvement of connectivity on the island with the conservation of its biodiversity, in a territory where species such as Darwin’s fox and pudu depend on the continuity of their habitats to survive, according to El Ciudadano news agency.
In addition to the wildlife crossings, the project includes high - standard double lanes, bridges, pedestrian walkways, overpass junctions,
service streets, improvements in road safety, lighting and drainage, with
the aim of benefiting both drivers and pedestrians as well as local fauna.
The works are expected to begin in 2028, once the engineering studies and
environmental assessment have been completed, with an execution period of close
to five years and entry into operation around 2033. Meanwhile, the contract
contemplates the maintenance of current infrastructure.
