The Government of Indonesia, has launched the National Action Plan for the Protection and Management of Blue Carbon Ecosystems (RENAKSI) 2025 - 2030, with the aim of strengthening its contribuition to climate change mitigation through the restoration of mangroves and seagrass meadows, according to ANTARA, a news agency that delivers real time information on various events from Indonesia and around the world.
The launch of RENAKSI reaffirms Indonesias’s role as a country with approximately 17% of the world’s blue carbon stocks, supported by 3.45 million hectares of mangrove forests and 660.000 hectares of seagrass meadows.
This plan, coordinated by the Coordinating Ministry of Food Affairs, is prepared in collaboration with the National Blu Carbon Action Association (NBCAP) and the secretariat in charge of Konservasi Indonesia.
The aim of RENAKSI is to create a national benchmark for synergizing blue carbon protection with inclusive financing strategies and its implementation will be carried out through coordination between sectors, with 21 action plans that will become priority programs with a direct impact on society.
In addition, the commitment will be presented at the Ocean Impact Summit 2026 in Bali, as part of strengthening national governance of marine ecosystems.
Key Features of RENAKSI:
• Target Ecosystems: Protection, restoration, and management of 3.45 million hectgares of mangrove forests and 660.000 hectares of seagrass meadows, comprising 17% of the world’s blue carbon reserves.
• Carbon Market Preparation: The plan aims to have at least two pilot projects market – ready within three years, involving validation and verification.
• Inclusive Approach: Integrates GEDSI principles into funding strategies, ensuring community involvement.
• Institutional Coordination: Aligned with the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, involving ministries responsible for marine affairs, environment, and forestry.
• Data and Monitoring: Yses updated mangrove maps, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventories. MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) systems and a national seagrass database.
• Scale: Includes broad, long – term goals for expanding marine conservation areas to 32.5 million hectares across 35 locations.
