Colombia, country in the north - western region of South America bathed by the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west, the only South American country to overlook the two oceans that bathe the continent, a land which boasts a stunning biodiversity, a very rich cultural heritage reflected by the influences of various Amerindian civilizizations, European settlements, African slaves and immigration from Europe and the Middle East, through the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism pointed out that birdwatchers in Colombia have documented an impressive number of species, many of which are migratory.
On 12th October on the occasion of the "October big day", Colombia once again established itself as the best country in the world for birdwatching.
In this global event much loved by birdwatchers, the Latin American country obtained the first position in the world ranking, surpassing other nations on this special day that coincides with the celebration of the World Migratory Bird Day, an emblematic date on which observers from all over the world mobilize and gather to record the sight of different species of birds.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism has highlighted that birdwatchers in Colombia have documented an impressive number of species, many of them migratory, that during this time of year travel from the north in search of a milder and warmer climate and abundance of food in the geographical area of the Equator.
As a note of interest on this special day, numerous resident species were also recorded, confirming the ornithological richness of Colombia.
According to the platform Ebird led by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology at Sanctuary in Ithaca, New York – U.S., Colombia recorded 1.404 species of birds during the "October big day" which means a very significant increase compared to last year when 1.389 species were documented on that occasion.
In the ranking of this edition, Peru ranked second behind Colombia with 1.328 species sighted and Brazil in third place with 1.240, data that unequivocally reaffirm Colombia's leadership in the field of birdwatching and its natural diversity.
This initiative seeks to exploit the potential of birdwatching tourism not only as an attraction but also as a means of generating economic development in various regions of the country.
