Weerberg-Austria | Tyrolean Alpine Magic Atmosphere.

Weerberg is a very appealing town of Austria where you can breathe the typical, charming Tyrolean Alpine magic atmosphere of a land which transmits in every corner unique feelings in the Schwatz district  at just 30, 0 kilometres from the stunning Innsbruck, one of the most attractive cities of that magnificent Central European country.

Once landed on Innsbruck in a magnificent Fly & Drive via Wattens another beautiful locality deserving to be visited driving by A12 Inntal Autobahn you can reach that centre of approximately 2,500 inhabitants located at an altitude of 882, 0 metres in a spectacular journey which represents in its kind a wonderful introduction of that land.

Admiring those striking images, you will immediately have the desire to discover and enjoy that territory crossed by the sinuous river Inn which with its picturesque descent forms in that specific geographic area the Unterinntal,, an attractive huge valley situated along its inferior course next to other splendid minor waterways and streams representing another marvellous post card of the most scenic Tyrol.

That Austrian corner is like a chain of gems with its many enchanting small resorts scattered in fairytale environment and it is enough to visit the nearest  Kolsass, Tux, Hippach and Kossalsberg to understand in which kind of Paradise you are admiring some of the best shining jewels of that Austrian State surrounded by a magic atmosphere.

 One the most impressive images of that resort that immediately capture the attention of the visitors is certainly its stupendous natural environment greatly preserved, all is totally intact with in addition a relevant historic patrimony consisting in splendid Churches, traditional wooden and stone houses surrounded by wonderful landscapes which could be protagonists in every successful novel.

The history of that town is very similar to many others of the region when it was integrated since ancient times in a vast Region called Noricum created by the Romans in the 1st century during their Imperial colonisation in central Europe.

That huge territory iincluded a large part of the modern Austria, some territories of current Bavaria extending until Hungary, the Northeastern regions of Italy lands of Slovenia and Croatia.

Many centuries ago Weerberg  was largely populated by farmers, artisans and people mainly devoted to small local trades with the nearest settlements, a simple life, working hard in a calm environment. 

An important event highlighting a considerable historic change of that area took place in medieval times with the discovery of relevant mines with a valuable extraction of silver. 

That period corresponded to a notable start-up with different activities related to that relevant resource with a notable enlargement of commercial operations and the development of new communications.

That productive source later made the fortune of the House of Habsburg which thanks to that increased its prestige and prosperity in an already very wealthy Empire.

Despite that part of the historic stages of the former village were also extremely linked to the Duchy of Bavaria protagonist of numerous disputes and clashes with that influential Imperial power with centuries highlighted by claims, treaties, diatribes regarding unclear borders with the desire of expansion and influences from both sides.

In many occasions those events were characterised by tense situations ending in battles and wars also due to the presence of those silver mines. 

For those reasons Weerberg suffered changes of rulers with those two contenders always establishing a very marked traditional feudalistic system favouring wealthy local lords who frequently governed not just villages or small agglomerations but entire counties and provinces. 

The current site after all those ups and downs was incorporated before in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and after the First World War when that Monarchy ceased to exist integrated in the Österreicher Republik, the present Republic of Austria.

For a brief period in more contemporary times it was also a part of Germany during the times of the Third Reich with that notorious event corresponding to the Anschluss Österreichs determining the annexation of the entire Austrian territories in 1938 during the times of Hitler re-taking its independence after the Second World War.

The town is subdivided in three specific areas, the first is called Mitterweerberg  representing the centre and beating heart of the municipality, Innerweerberg consisting in a sort of belt and main hallway leading to Aussweeberg which is the territorial area corresponding to the extra radius of that attractive municipality.

The local core is mainly developed around Mitterberg, a long road which from south west to east crosses the entire boundaries while Kirchgasse is the main entrance and exit in its northern side leading to Sankt Peter Kirche, the Church dedicated to St. Peter. 

Another important artery is Wiesenhofweg, the main street lying in the southernmost side while another one called Feldergasse is a further relevant axis of communication starting from Mitterberg continuing along its course towards the northern suburbs.

One of the local historic highlights is undoubtedly Rablhaus, an iconic site from where you can start the visit. 

That beautiful wooden house erected in the 16th century,  a charming construction erected on two levels with splendid rectangular windows placed along its perimeter with a central scenic balcony completed by a very attractive roof with picturesque chimneys.

Located in a splendid position highlighted by great views of a wonderful chain of Alpine peaks, that local emblem is pretty famous to host a very interesting Museum introducing the visitors the chronological stages of the life of the farmers and local inhabitants explaining step by step the complete history of the population of Tyrol and for all that it is not a simple exhibition.

 It represents in its kind a full immersion in the historical, cultural soul of that land in which lifestyle, culture, traditions and daily life in different periods had and have as protagonists ordinary people. 

That site is simply great because it offers the chance to know and learn more many aspects extremely rooted thanks also to a strong spirit of preservation of cultural values of the settlers who created the history of the town century by century.

That kind of site is considered a traditional Volksmuseum identifying everything the residents in different times made for the community.

Those kinds of exhibitions are very common in all the German speaking countries with the establishment of those special museums often elevated as sort of icons, including considered venerated Institutions.

During the visit an extensive explanation will accompany you to know all the activities and professions developed since the 17th century, you will have the opportunity to admire a large collection consisting in traditional utensils, objects, pieces of old instruments, machines and tools used in agriculture and other manual works.

Other rooms will introduce you to a traditional Tyrolean house showing how it was originally arranged in the past with a loyal reproduction of a typical kitchen,bedroom, workspace while on the first floor a further section is devoted to Sacred items. 

That iconic building in addition is used for different kinds of events such as meetings, concerts, very typical farmer expositions but also site for traditional markets. 

For all that and more Rablhaus is a sort of distinctive and emblematic symbol of the entire community highly considered and regarded extreme pride.

Unbeflechte Empfangnis Marias Kirche is the current local Parish Church dedicated to the Immaculate Conception Virgin Mary, a Religious construction built in the 19th century also called Neue Kirche, the new Church.

It is a magnificent expression of a traditional Romantic style, a stunning fine example of architecture pretty common during the period of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in vogue since the late 18th century to give a sort of monumental grandeur to many Churches elevated in that concrete geographic area.

That kind of movement had an important development also in the nearest Germany in particular in Bavaria as an artistic hymn to elevate at the maximum level the national art and architecture with a special attention to concrete aesthetic concepts  with a constant research of fine executions to integrate in the natural environment as a sort of happy marriage with nature and art both protagonists.

Established on an ample rectangular plan, highlighted by a charming sandy cream tonality that Sacred site boasts refined lines with splendid marked outlines all around the main facade with also a very balanced structural layout in which all the architectural elements were placed with criteria covering specific spaces and sections.

The front side is greatly highlighted by two twin majestic, stylish towers both with scenic spires topped by iron crosses flanking the central body offering an image very attractive.

The spires are totally covered by glazed bricks, detailed ornaments partially reminiscent the fabulous wonderful roof of the beautiful Cathedral of St. Stephen in Vienna you can admire in the Austrian capital in the central square Stephenplatz.

On their facades you can admire some splendid mullioned windows highlighted by beautiful arcades, simply perfect is the symmetry with a total harmonious composition of the upper block.

That splendid construction boasts a magnificent portal with small vaults and fine framed outlines in a plan which was developed with three naves, two lower aisles pretty spacious and the central one with high walls, columns and ceiling painted in Romantic style.

Of very fine execution is the ample apse forming a semicircle in which is situated a wonderful altar highlighted by splendid painted Religious themes visible above the altarpiece. A further relevant attraction is the presence of stunning stained glass windows depicting the Via Crucis, the Way of the Cross of Jesus Christ to the mount Calvary.

A notable stylish artistic architectural highlight is  the extreme research of a perfect aesthetic between tonalities and geometry with a great harmony of the colours perfectly combined with  a perfect symmetry of decorated ample arcades next to the superb execution of a marvellous ceiling making all that a masterpiece of creativity by talented masters.

Sankt Peter Kirche located in northern area of the municipality is another considerable historic attraction, it is also named Alte Kirche, the old Church dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle. 

The position where it was erected that beautiful architectural gem is very picturesque because it is situated on the top of a scenic mountainous plateau surrounded by Alpine vegetation and flanked by majestic peaks dominating the entire town and the valley.

That Sacred temple has a long history, is a relevant masterpiece of the local patrimony since medieval times despite it is not the Parish Church. 

Erected in the 13th century on a vast irregular rectangular base originally the current building was developed in Gothic style but also with some marked, Romanesque details.

The construction still shows some of those typical details in use in the Middle Ages as a traditional gable roof height and size of a design used in the Alpine Regions and Central Europe established between the 13th and early 15th centuries. 


After several restorations it was largely modified in the 18th century and due to the usual and predominant style adopted in that period it took a traditional Baroque aspect.  

That work was led by the architect Franz De Paula Penz.a talented artist from Navis who also elevated the famous Wiltener Basilika of Innsbruck, the Kirche der Congregatio Jesu at Bressanone in the Italian Alto Adige and many other stunning works all around the Tyrol.

That magnificent white complex is highlighted by very stylish lines, notable is the harmony created among all its architectural elements inserted in the central body attached to a stupendous bell tower with a small doorway placed in a refined front side beneath a traditional sloping roof.

That imposing structure  is characterised by a fabulous conical-shaped spire, curved and rounded windows on its sides, a style of clear Nordic and pure Germanic Baroque, a representation which found in Tyrol eminent artists creating a notable school.

Once inside you can admire a long central nave and on its sides you will be delighted by a magnificent series of high vertical arched windows which transmit luminosity to all the spaces including in the apse. For date of construction, position and historic value it is considered the emblematic symbol of the town and probably also the most photographed.

In the immediate surroundings of the town many are the interesting excursions you can enjoy and one of them which is a must and I suggest you is that leading to the Gilfert, a mount offering superb panoramic views considered one of the most attractive peaks of the Tuxer Alpen that range of mountains encircling Weerberg. 

That wonderful peak with its 2506, 0 metres on its summit is highlighted by the presence of a very big and high cross and it is since a long time a more than beloved destination for trekkers for a scenic trail also frequented by climbers who especially in its northern and southern sides can enjoy impressive steep walls practising their favourite activity. 

That very charming height is also the source of the stream Lamarkbach which continues its course reaching the Zillertal valley and it is often a favourite subject of landscape painters and photographers.

It is possible to reach that stunning mount by a spectacular path starting from a verdant plateau going up via Nonsalm at an altitude of 1785, 0 metres where you will meet a small refuge consisting in a scenic gable wooden house highlighted by a framed Crucifix fixed on its facade.

From that place before to continue towards the top you can enjoy unforgettable views very suggested for those who love to take many pictures immortalising something of simply extraordinary with a couple of Alpine crests absolutely wonderful, the last section is very scenic with a panoramic straight before the start of a bend flanked by pines at the foot of the northern spur of the Gilfert.

That path is furthermore highly appreciated by snowshoes and and adventure ski lovers who in presence of snow can practise those activities along that stunning ascent. 

Worth also a visit to the Weidener Hütte, another famous Alpine refuge situated at 1799,0 metres of altitude, pretty popular because some years ago was awarded as the best Refuge of Austria so in its kind it is a sort of icon of the Tyrolean Alps.

It is a site providing accommodations, one of the most famous Alpine hospitality structures elevated in the entire Inntal valley, once there you will be delighted by a verdant Alpine forest, unforgettable panoramic views of majestic peaks and as the previous it is a great place highly loved by people fond of ski tours.

The path leading to the summit is not extremely difficult, just the last section is pretty steep but what is simply impressive is the view of fabulous landscapes you will admire all around where rugged mountains and the most attractive Alpine vegetation are in great harmony forming an environment absolutely striking.

From that point all the fervent trekkers can have many chances to enjoy other magnificent trails, one of them I recommend is that leading to the Nurpensjoch, a stunning peak which with its 2525, 0 metres of altitude is very suggestive for its very wild image because in some points it has a lunar aspect lunar place with just rocks and a total absence of vegetation.

That path at the end of its development has a coefficient of difficulty pretty high, the top is characterised by a very scenic shape with two rocky spurs separated by a narrow space above an impressive vertical wall and apart that marvellous image do not forget to take some pictures during your ascent to the western crest absolutely beautiful.

The Rastkogel is another more than suggested destination, a height which with its 2762, 0 metres of altitude reachable by a stupendous trail with an intermediate stage at the Rastkogel Hütte, a refuge situated at an altitude of 2117, 0 metres.

That marvellous peak is a sort of a majestic Alpine pyramid, the final stretch is indicated for very good experienced trekkers, its northern side is very appreciated by climbers because it has an impressive steep wall.

In that outstanding Alpine territory you are in the heart of a magnificent area which offers several other spectacular excursions, the Karwendel are a paradise for all that.

An iconic route absolutely wonderful is that so-called Sechs Tuxer Hütten which translated means the six huts of the Tuxer Alps consisting in a pretty long itinerary reaching six Alpine refuges.

Another one well known by several trekkers is that named Sieben Tuxer Gipfel, the seven summits of the Tuxer heights reaching the seven most important peaks of that superb Austrian Alpine chain. 

That itinerary is particularly loved by the most enthusiastic trekking tours lovers planning that fantastic route in spring, summer organising stages with overnights in the Alps, an experience to try once in a life if you are a fan of that outdoor activity because the best of the Alpine Austria is also there on those unforgettable heights.

Winter sports are greatly practised in Weerberg especially Alpine skiing, thanks to linked to a long tradition very rooted born many years ago.

The resort  thanks to that constantly receives very considerable flows of tourism for its splendid pistes established next to outstanding services as a superb network ski-lifts  as the
Hüttegglift and Schwannerlift connecting to tracks pretty steep, varied with several sharp bends and thrilling straights.
 
All the facilities developed around Weerrberg are very efficient, with a complete information of the tracks and a great preparation of the snow in the entire the ski area.

  

That area of the Oriental Alps is an Eden for every skier, you can find magnificent spaces at a very short distance, very suggested are the pistes of Achensee, Achenkirch and Pertisau,  in that area there are also some Blue slopes for beginners and a good range of reds for intermediate apart some for masters.  

Do not miss the iconic Zillertal Arena which offers around its striking large Ski area different great places with also fantastic black pistes very challenging with including some stunining steep sections highlighted spectacular jumps .

All that territory is great option to practise Alpine skiing at a very high level spending holidays enjoying that activity on tracks which apart to be very challenging are always greatly maintained satisfying the most exigent skiers.

Other places very recommended are under the summit of the Rastkogel, another site you can not miss and further along the way from Weerberg to the nearest town of Schwaz very suitable for all people who wants to start to learn skiing in a very scenic environment.

A notable detail to take in consideration is that a big part of the splendid local red slopes ideal for intermediate skiers have some points great for experienced masters for good tests and trainings.

Also that aspect explains you why the Karwendel pistes are very famous  because a red can have some sections excellent for a skier searching improvements before to move to a black track, they offer a superb succession of ample curves followed by steep straights, in brief you will find there very technique pistes.

Another special site is along the slopes of the previously mentioned Mount Gilfert descending from an altitude of over 2,500 metres, a place extremely loved by locals and where every year takes place a famous competition called Gilfert Trophy.

It is a must to reach the top of the Haustatt, once there you can enjoy a wide panoramic view overlooking the valley admiring in addition the crown of mountains surrounding the resort.

That  site is particularly highlighted by the beautiful view of the silhouette of the Kellerjoch with its 2,344 metres, the picturesque Rofan Group and also in that area there are beautiful pistes suitable for everyone.

The Hüttegg ski lift is a great service permitting the chance to reach an altitude of approximately 1,500 metres, ended the ascent you will be in a fantastic point offering a great opportunity to admire wonderful panoramic views, an ideal place if photography is one of your favourite hobbies.

Weerberg also offers places to practise Snowboarding and special spaces ideal for families with children.

Cross Country skiing is also practised by many people with many kilometres suitable to enjoy hours and hours in a fantastic uncontaminated territory packed by virgin forests with trails simply perfect for that sport born in Scandinavia skiing and crossing an immaculate nature echanting many people.

All the fans of that Nordic sport can enjoy great trails very appropriate for both styles, skating or classical because the territory has flat, undulated, steep and mixed sections.

The resort offers a multitude of other activities thanks to large networks of wonderful routes for enthusiastic mountain bikers and cyclists on road, for that I recommend you the area of Wattens including that surrounding Schwaz and the mentioned Pertisau.

I suggest so much to visit the latter, it is a fairytale marvel considered among the most picturesque centres of the Tyrolean, a  very famous site because it was the holiday residence of the Emperor Maximilian I who spent his relaxing times far from his court in a mansion called Fürstenhaus.

That marvellous small centre furthermore is on the shore of a beautiful lake called Achensee, a fantastic water basin elevated as a pearl of Austria enclosed between the Karwendel and Brandenberg Alps, one of the most photographed sites of the entire Tyrol.

Situated at 929, 0 metres of altitude it has a length of 9, 4 kilometres with a maximum width of approximately 1, 0 kilometres, pretty deep reaching a maximum depth of about 133, 0 metres.

On that Eden of blue waters it is possible to practise windsurfing, sailing and other water sports including swimming in summer with temperatures of the water around 20-21°C.

Despite that waters basin is not too big it boasts around it a varied environment with a fantastic biodiversity, flanked by hills of different height, pretty flat green plateaus in other corners immediately beneath towering heights, a scenery which is in its kind a natural step absolutely fascinating surrounded by a magic atmosphere.

Very close I suggest to visit a spectacular small centre called Maurach am Achensee, a gem in the middle of the Alps very famous for its Rofanbahn one of the oldest railway tracks of Austria.  

All around the local territory the environment is marvellous with an Alpine vegetation simply magnificent and it is a beautiful site to admire the southern side of that wonderful waters basin with its spectacular bay from a different wonderful perspective.

That place is recommended for all those who love Nordic skiing, winter hikes, snow shoes, with chances to practise curling and ice skating.

About historic and cultural tourism with reference to other special places, the superb city of Innsbruck (I wrote a post if you are interested) is very close and all the nearest villages and little towns in the immediate vicinity have many interesting monuments showing the visitor a vast range of great Neo-Gothic and Baroque diamonds. 

Some small municipalities boast fantastic architectural jewels, fairytale agglomerations composed by groups of appealing wooden and stone houses which with their captivating image are a traditional attraction an landmark of Tyrol. I suggest you apart those previously mentioned to fill your days with very pleasant visits including in your plans Bradnberg, Fugen, Vomp, Haizenberg and Achenkirchen.

The town also offers a calendar of events during all year including local Religious feasts and celebrations with a notable participation, in summer concretely in the month of July takes place a procession with music highlighted by the presence of the famous Schutzen.

That is a special event in which history and local folklore live a sort of great marriage with people wearing typical costumes in a special atmosphere highlighted by traditional bands, flags and symbols representing the historic heritage in a very vibrant and animated environment.

Another great appointment is certainly Weerberg Classic, a splendid occasion to see as protagonists vintage cars coming from different countries calling a multitude of people and fans of those kinds of emblematic, magnificent vehicles.

A further attraction is the famous Christmas Market with its fascinating, magic aura loved by many people who plan trips there to enjoy the lively and suggestive event in that fairytale place with a series of beautiful appointments, a great invitation to live something of simply special.

The local gastronomy also plays a considerable role with its vast and delicious gastronomic offer always ready to satisfy many visitors who can have the chance to taste a wide variety of different, superb gastronomic specialities.

The traditional cuisine of Tyrol is a great festival of flavours and delights with excellent plates reflecting a culinary art boasting a very old tradition strongly rooted with a wide range of soups, meat stews and casseroles among others.

Do not miss to try the delicious Knödeln also called Canederli, a typical plate similar to Gnocchi often prepared in broth or accompanied by different kinds of sauces. There are many kinds of Knödeln with spinach cheese, bacon, cured ham or depending  of the local or familiar traditions using other kinds of ingredients.

The Kässpazln is another popular speciality consisting in Spätzle, those famous dumplings very usual in the German and Austrian cuisine prepared with cheese generally Bergkäse, Tilsiter, Bergbaron but also in some occasions with Emmental. 

 

Regarding those delicious daily products you are in land boasting a secular, superb tradition and next to the previous worth a mention the exquisite Graukäse often used to in different kinds of foods and also frequently served in varied appetisers or assorted buffets.

If you want to appreciate something 100% traditional reflecting the Tyrolean culinary spirit  try the Tiroler Gröstl, a mixed plate prepared with potatoes, onion and fried meat.

Among the most popular soups worth a mention the famed Gemusesuppe prepared in the local style with celery, carrots, leek and potatoes. or the Tiroler Suppe, based in split yellow beans or lentils, containing lard, onions, potatoes, butter, flour and celeriac root.

The Speckknödelnsuppe is a further very traditional, prepared with chopped speck, eggs, milk, flour, butter, white bread, onion, parsley, salt and beef broth and another is the Gerstensuppe with main ingredient barley.

Excellent is also the quality of local sausages and as in the entire Austria is very common the popular Schnitzel, that iconic breaded cutlet of pork or beef served with potatoes or salads, a speciality born in Vienna but also very famed in that State.

Absolutely notable is also the wide variety of cakes and desserts and among the most relevant you can enjoy a classical, delicious Apfelstrudel or the typical Kiachl, a fried dough pastry very popular also in the German Bavaria and Thuringia.

In Tyrol you can find some excellent white wines such as Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc of very good quality, very palatable and with a pure strew colour very similar for taste, texture and body to those fine, selected wines produced the Italian South Tirol, the Alto Adige.

The nearest airport is Innsbruck-Kranebitten Flughafen situated at just 30/35 minutes driving so a brilliant and fantastic option to reach the resort in a very short time.
