Hajar Al - Sinanat, Al Khaboura, Oman | A Team of Archaeologists Uncovered a Rare Prehistoric Rock Art Site

A team of archaeologists have uncovered a rare prehistoric rock art site at Hajar - Al Sinanat an archaeological area located in the Wilayat of Al Khaboura within Al Batinah Governorate in northern Oman.

The find features a massive rock face densely covered in ancient petroglyphs, showcasing a detailed visual record of how early inhabitants viewed their surroundings.

The petroglyphs were created using a “rock - pecking” method. Early artisans repeatedly stuck the stone surface to chip away the darker patina, exposing the lighter rock undermeath to form distinct shapes.

The carvings feature a wide variety of subjects, providing deep insights into early ecological knowledge and daily practices. Depictions of animals are visible with drawings of bulls, cows, mountain goats, ibexes, and rare representations of predators like the Arabian Leopard, along humans depicted with anthropomorphic symbols and figures as well the presence of abstract geometric patterns.

The panels were added to over hundreds and possibly thousands of years. Newer images are frequently found layered alongside older ones, reflecting centuries of continued use of the same rocks for cultural and symbolic expression.

Currently, specialists continue to study the site. At the same time, measures are being taken for its conservation and restoration with the aim of reinforcing its historical and tourist value as one of the testimonies of the rich Omani cultural heritage.

The Omani Ministry of Heritage and Tourism noted that the discovery is part of ongoing efforts to identify and preserve Oman’s archaeological sites. These types of findings expand scientists’a knowledge of the living conditions and natural environment of ancient civilizations.

This technology initiative is designed to help Colombia shift from reactive emergency responses to “anticipatory action”, taking preventative measures ahead of disasters like floods, landslides, and droughts, and will make possible to consult information on risks in the territory, historical emergencies, public investments and operational capacities in real time in a single portal.

The platform integrates data on emergencies, natural hazards, public investment, machinery in operation and capacities of the National Disaster Risk Management System (SNGRD) all centralized, avoiding dispersed procedures or requests via petition rights.

For the development of this platform, The UNGRD completed a comprehensive multi - year project that maps the exact risk and vulnerability of all 1.122 Colombian municipalities to guide evidence - based decision making from the national down to the local level.

With this tool, mayors, governors, ministers, technical agencies and community leaders will be able to access a unified information base, strengthening evidence - based decision making and improving the protection of lives and property.

The creation of this innovative platform undoubtedly marks a step toward more modern, transparent and intelligent risk management, underpinned by open data and public access.

Puerto Barú, Panama | Proposed as Destination to Host Royal Caribbean's Mega Park

Mexico officially rejected Royal Caribbean's proposed "Perfect Day Mexico" project in Quintana Roo due to severe ecological concerns regarding mangroves and the adjacent barrier reef. Taking advantage of this, Panama is actively pitching its own Puerto Barú mega - development to capture the company's massive cruise investment.

Puerto Barú is a controversial, private multipurpose “green” port development located 20 km from the city of David on the Pacific coast in the Chiriquí province of Panama. The estimated $250 million megaproject is designed to boost regional logistics, large - scale tourism infrastructure and create around 2.000 jobs, but has faced strong oppositions due to its location near critical mangrove habitats.

Mayer Mizrachi Matalon, politician, businessman and mayor of Panama City since 2024, wrote a message to Royal Caribbean, in which proposed to build the “Perfect Day” park in his country, after the rejection of the Mexican environmental authorities to this project in Mahahual, south of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is also located.

Through the social network X the Panamanian businessman also linked to cryptocurrencies, wrote: “Come and build your water park in Panama. We will expedite permitting, save millions and your guests will enjoy two oceans, the Canal, the ancient city, the most diverse jungle and the best connectivity hub in the Americas.”

The politician cited a report on the rejection by Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) of this water park development in Mahahual, which had a project investment of $1.5 billion and was expected to generate about 4.000 jobs, which led him to be defended by Quintana Roo’s Governor Mara Lezama, against the criteria of the federal government presided over by Claudia Sheinbaum.

Environmentalists and Greenpeace heavily protested the site, citing severe threats to jaguar and manatee habitats as well as the Mesoamerican Reef. SEMARNAT announced the project will not be approved and Royal Caribbean subsequently pulled its plans, through the company noted it remains committed for future investments in the country.

It is unknown if Royal Caribbean already has a home port in Panama, from where cruise ships depart to tour canal or visit nearby countries, will be dissatisfied with this resolution, if they will modify their project or desist from it, as REPORTUR.mx has been revealing.

In the responses to this proposal for the establishment of this mega park in the Central American country, several Panamanian citizens point out that there are already water problems and that they would not allow the construction of a water park that consumes this resource and puts their mangroves at risk.

Despite the fall in the tourism sector, a report by official television announced that the Cuban government will rescue this train, pointing out that the Hershey electric railway restoration project, the only one of its kind in Cuba will be executed and alongside the train recovery, work also includes the restoration of the station in Matanzas.

The Tren “Eléctrico de Matanzas”, famously known as the Hershey Train is a historic, 136 - km electrified standard - gauge railway linking Matanzas and Havana. It is unique as the only non - oil - burning railway in Cuba, carrying passengers through scenic landscapes since 1922.

Established in the 1920s by US chocolate tycoon Milton S. Hershey to connect his sugar mills and export hubs, the train runs for about 92 km between the Casablanca station in Havana and the city of Matanzas, passing through modest stations in towns like Guanabo, Jibacoa, Camilo Cienfuegos (Hershey) and San Mateo offering beautiful views of the Cuban countryside, most notably a spectacular panorama of the Yumurí Valley.

According to El Nuevo Herald, the Minister of Transport of Cuba, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, indicated that the project will be financed by the Fund of the Development of Public Transport, and it has been working since 2025 for the rescue of the electric train, when the Deputy Director of the Cuban Railroad Union in Matanzas René Peña Garcia declared the utility of the train recovery for its use in the transportation of people, in addition to tourist and cultural purposes.

However, the tourism crisis continues on the island, because according to data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), Cuba received 328.608 international tourists between January and April, which represents a drop of 55.8% compared to the same period last year, and in April, the Caribbean island received only 30.551 visitors, the rescue of the electric train is considered a priority, as it connects some 46 rural communities in Matanzas and represeting a resource to attract tourists.
