Located in the village of Gastouri located about 10 kilometres southwest of Corfu downtown, the Achilleion Palace was built in the late 19th centuryon plans by the Italian architects Raffaele Carito and Antonio Landi, as a hermitage, a place of quiet for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, better known as Sissi,  after a suggestion by the Austrian consul Alexander von Warsberg, and later owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, reigning from 1888 to 1918.

Corfu was the Austrain Empress’ favourite vacation destination and she wanted a palace to gratify her admiration for Greece, its language, history and culture.

The architectural Pompeian style was used to suggest an ancient palace of the mythical Phaeacia, also known as Scheria, a mythical island nation in Greek mythology, notably featured in the iconic Homer’s Odyssey described as an utopian island, a place of great beauty and abundance and motifs centres highlight the hero Achilles, from which the name of the palace is derived

The Hellenic Public Properties Company (ETAD), which manages Greece’s real estate assets, has introduced upgraded facilities designed to enrich the visitor experience at the museum of the palace.

The project includes three interactive booths, a triangular screen and a polygonal structure featuring five high - quality video productions that guide visitors through the history of the palace, its construction, gardens and its reonowned designers.

The productions immerse visitors in different eras of the palace’s legacy, from the times of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria, to Kaiser Wilhelm II, who later transformed it into a symbol of power.

The installations also highlight the palace’s architecture, art, frescoes, furniture, and statues offering educational insights until restoration work is completed and the museum reopens.

The thematic documentaries feature well - known Greek actors including Nikos Kouris, Cora Karvouni, Aphrodite Doritis and Vicky Papadopoulos, adding depth to the storytelling.

This tour will definitely serve to open  up a wider field of knowledge, thanks to information provided on the exhibits and to the architecture value of the palace itself, an authentic jewel shining on Corfu island.

Thailand | Planning an Initiative Offering Free Domestic Flights to 200.000 International Travellers to Reverse Declining Visitor Numbers

Thailand is looking at to boost tourism to reverse declining visitor numbers and is planning to introduce an initiative named “Buy international, Free Thailand Domestic Flights” offering free domestic flights to 200.000 international travellers.

The Southeast Asian country with this campaign is trying reverting a shump of 6% of its arrivals in the first seven months of 2025, a decline mainly due to a sharp drop in Chinese visitors, an intense competition from regional rivals like Japan and Vietnam, which are aggressively promoting their own tourism sectors, offering attractive alternatives for travellers, and China that is intensifying efforts to capture the lucrative tourism market, positioning tourism as a cornerstone of its economic recovery.

The country is gearing up to hand out free domestic flights aiming to attract international tourists beyond major hubs, and Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong announced on 20th August that he will ask the Cabinet for a THB 700 million, approximately US$19.5 million budget to launch the mentioned campaign “Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights”.

The Minister said initiative could bring at leat 200.000 international tourists to various destinations beyond the popular Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket stating that the country wants travellers to visit and enjoy more places around the country than just big cities, pointing to UNESCO heritage sites and off - the - beaten - path hot spots as key targets.

Officials project the campaign could generate at least US$246 million in direct tourism spending and fuel a wider economic impact of THB21.8 billion, about US$609 million.

Under the plan, international travellers booking air tickets to Thailand through airlines’ websites, partner carriers, or online travel agents would receive two free domestic flight tickets, round trip or one way with a 20 – kilogram baggage allowance.

The Tourism Authority (TAT) will team up with six airlines, such as Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai VietJet to make the promotion fly. Tickets subsidies will be capped at THB1.750, about US$49 per leg or THB3.500 equivalent to US$98 for a round trip.

The scheme if rapidly adopted could still start before the end of August, however travellers would be able to use the reward between September and November, just before the start of the peak season.

The Minister said to local media that the concept is not new. Japan implemented a similar scheme of free domestic flights to spread tourist traffic into secondary cities after the Covid - 19 pandemic. Thailand with its initiative has the purpose to boost tourism and the national economy, but also attracting travellers to discover the full beauty of the country.

Chile advances with its numerous reforms in its tourism sector and is also moving closer to implementing stricter safety standards for adventure tourism after its Chamber of Deputies approved a bill to enhance safety in the industry by a wide margin, by 115 votes in favor and 10 against.

The bill, which now moves to the Senate, establishing stricter measures, the new regulations require all adventure tourism providers to have the mandatory “ R Seal”, undergo specialized technical reviews and comply with strict safety standards.

The law also strengthens the National Tourism Board (Sernatur) inspections, increases sanctions and gives powers to close services that do not comply with regulations, aiming to ensure quality and safety for tourists.

To obtain the “R Seal”, companies must undergo a technical verification by a specialized agency to ensure they meet. A mandatory certification will officially designate the adventure tourism providers that meet the new safety and quality standards and the accreditation must be visible so that tourists and uswers can easily identify it.

The new verification process is different from the inspections carried out by the National Tourism Board, but both will complement each other, allowing for more robust field operations and a comprehensive approach to safety.

The law introduces stronger consequences for non - compliant providers, including higher fines and the possibility of temporary or permanent closure of the services that do not respect the rules.

In addition, deadlines are established to implement these measures and relevant points as  :

•    The regulation of the law must be prepared in a maximum f 12 months.
•    Defining how the R Seal will be applied according to the level of risk of each activity.
•    How often it must be renewned.

The Undersecretary of Tourism, Verónica Pardo, valued the approval of this bill in the Chamber of Deputies and stated that, this move it is a milestone for the sector, because for the first time modifications are introduced to the Tourism Law with the focus on the safety of people.

This is a clear sign the country wants that those who practice adventure tourism to do so with the confidence that are clear, verifiable and enforceable standards. In addition, this step reinforces the State’s commitment to responsible tourism, where the quality of the experience and safety always go hand in hand.

For the National Director of Sernatur, Cristóbal Benitez, the approval in the Chamber of Deputies of this bill mark a decisive step because this progress, which has had cross - cutting support from all sector, is part of the consolidation of the efforts promoted by Sernatur in recent years to strengthen security.

The operations were managed from the creation of a Program for the Regulation of Tourism Services, the incorporation of new types of adventure tourism activities to the National Registry, the verification under safety management requirements and the updating of technical standards, to the development of the first technical standard of bungee.

In conclusion, the primary goal is to strengthen safety and quality standards across Chile’s burgeoning adventure tourism sector. By formalizing safety requirements, the law aims to provide a more secure and reliable experience for tourists.

The bill contributes to the formalization and sustainable growth of tourism in Chile, which is becoming a major active travel hub in South America.

With this step Chile seeks not only to offer unique experiences in adventure tourism, but also to protect who enjoy them, ensuring that the activities are carried out under reliable and regulated conditions.

The data provided by INS show that arrivals grew by a minimal 0.1% to 5.79 million,  In the fist six months of 2025 1.11 International tourists visited the country, a 5.5%, increase year - over year, although international arrivals represent only 19.2% of total arrivals.

In contrast, overnight stays grew strongly, with an increase of 2.3% compared to last year, representing 11.58 million units and indicating visitors are staying longer in the country.

INS analysts noted that Romania’s entry into the Schenghen Area on 1st January 2025, may have contributed to smoother travel for Europeans, though the Institute of Statistics cautioned that year - over year comparisons may be less precise due to the change in border reporting.

The Carpathian Mountains, the Danube River with its delta, alongside historical sites and UNESCO World Heritage Sites were the places most visited. Cultural events such as the UNTOLD electric music festival in Cluj Napoca and the George Enescu International Festival in Bucharest draw large crowds and there was a growing interest in ecotourism and rural experiences.

At the regional level Bucharest, a vibrant, budget - friendly city, offering several historic and cultural sites, like its Old Town, top museums, cultural attractions and known for its lively nightlife, remained the leading destination. Constanta County located on the border with Bulgaria, in the Dobruja region, Romania’s Black Sea hub, drew 366.200 tourists and nearly 977.000 overnight stays with its capital Constanta still remaining a powerful summer magnet, particularly for domestic travellers due to its renowned, long beaches, entertainment and a vibrant nightlife.

Other counties also had strong performances earlier this year, like Cluj County, a land with a rich cultural and historical heritage and tech hub in Transylvania accounted 280.000 arrivals in the H1 2025, Prahova County in the historical region Muntenia, famous for the beautiful landscapes of the Carpathian mountains, famous ski resorts, renowned wineries, and fine baroque architecture recorded more than 134.000 arrivals in the first quarter of 2025.

Nationwide the net occupancy rate for tourist accommodation stood at 25.7%, marginally higher than a higher year.

In conclusion Romania’s tourism despite this minimal growth is positive and the sector is seeing increased popularity due its rich natural landscapes and heritage. The country’s entry into the Schenghen area has simplified travel for European visitors potentially contributing to longer stays and Romania is actively working to improve accessibility and its global profile, making it an increasingly attractive destination.
