South Korea is notaby expanding the fleet of its flag carrier Korean Air, the country’s largest airline based on fleet size, international destinations and international flights, founding member of SkyTeam and SkyTeam cargo alliance, among the top 20 airlines in terms of passengers carried, owned by Hanjin Group, and has agreed to purchase 103 planes in a deal worth approximately $36.2 million.
The deal coincides with South Korean President Lee Myung’s visit to Washington, D.C., U.S. and also includes engine and a maintance program worth an additional $13.8 billion.
The aircraft purchase includes :
• 20 Boeing 777 – 9
• 25 Boeing 787 – 10
• 50 Boeing 737 – 10 passenger jets
• 8 Boeing 777 – 8F freighters
The carrier called the order “a proactive measure to support Korean Air’s long - term growth following its integration with Asiana Airlines”, adding that its fleet strategy is "to standardize long - term operations” around five aircraft families : Boeing 777, 787, and 737 planes, and Airbus A350 and A321neo aircraft.
Korean Air last year said it would order 20 777 - 9 and 20 787 - 10 planes from Boeing, with options for an additional aircraft. The new order is separate from that one, as Reuters reported.
With a larger fleet, Korean Air will be able to offer more frequency to key tourist destinations including New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo and expanding its connectivity globally.
With this move South Korea will enhance its air operations that are already extensive, supported by world - class airport infrastructure, especially Incheon International Airport, which serves as primary global gateway, and a total of 13 airports providing several handling international flights, and all capable of domestic service.
