Mozambique | Eco - Tourism Development Acceleration in the Country’s New World Heritage Site

Mozambique, a country located in southeastern Africa, highlighted by an extensive coastline filled by pristine beaches fronting the Mozambique channel, a section of the Indian Ocean which separates mainland Africa from the island of Madagascar, highlighted by a vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, a rich biodiversity, a tropical climate, and boasting relevant resources is having an acceleration in developing eco -tourism thanks to the new World Heritage Site iSimgaliso Wetland Park and Maputo National Park.

Maputo National Park, formerly known as Maputo Special Reserve, a protected area in southern Mozambique, encompassing both terrestrial and marine ecosystems is entering a new phase of eco -tourism development following its recent designation as part of of the iSimgaliso Wetland Park. a huge protected along the coast of South Africa’s KwaZulu – Natal Province.

This large and ecologically diverse transboundary property located along the border of South Africa and Mozambique includes a wide variety of ecosystems such as reefs, sandy beaches, coastal dunes, freshwater lakes, swamps, mangroves, seagrass, beds, and savannah, all environments that are largely intact and support a high level of biodiversity.

 The park is located on Maputo Bay, about 100 kilometers southeast of Maputo city. The park was officially established in 2021, merging from the Maputo Special Reserve and the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve and part of the larger Usuthu - Tembe - Futi Transfrontier Conservation Area, has seena substantial ecological recovery through species rewilding and the establishment of tourism infrastructure, including lodges and multiple campsites.

Maputo National Park is co - managed by Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation and Peace Parks Foundation, an organization founded in 1997 that aims to re - establish, renew and conserve large ecosystems in the African continent, transcending man – made boundaries and focused on the development of five transboundary landscapes in southern Africa.

In 2024, nearly 20.000 tourists visited the 104.000 - hectare park, which features a 100 kilometres stretch of secluded coastline, wetlands, lakes, plains, mangrove forests and in addition the  is home to a variety orf animals, including antelope, crocodiles, hippos, zebras, various birds species and also known for its diverse marine life. 

New tourism activities are underway in the national park with the launch of boat cruises, e – biking trails, and turtle safari, aimed at diversifying experiences, developing eco – tourism and generating sustainable income.

With Maputo National Park located within a three - hour drive of the capital of the country and its integration into the new World Heritage Site iSimgaliso Wetland Park, industry stakeholders are already working and see a strong potential for eco - tourism and to position the area as a leading  bush  and  beach destination in southern Africa.
