This very special space will be dedicated to sailing, fishing and other recreational activities, consolidating this site as a national hub which marks the beginning of this tourism infrastructure project that will require an investment of $24.5 million.

This new marina will be possible after the signing of a contract between the Municipality of Carrillo, part of the district of the Hoiancha canton, in the Guanacaste province, located on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica approximately 5.0 kilometres from the Sámara district and ASODEMAC, the Association for the Development of the Marina del Coco.

This project, which has been in the making for more than two decades, will strengthen both the tourist attractions and the maritime identity of Playas de El Coco, one of the oldest beach communities in Guanacaste province surrounded by stunning beaches with rows of palm trees and rocky bays, well known for its lively nightlife and excellent access point for enjoying water sports.

The work meets all the requirements of technical feasibility, including operational, environmental and maritime engineering criteria, among others, assessed by the CIMAT, the Institutional Commission of Marinas and Tourist Berths and in which the ICT, the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo, the Costa Rican Tourism Board participates and  the contract through which the municipality of Carrillo granted the concession of the area to develop the marina was reviewed and endorsed according to these criteria.

The Marina del Coco will be developed with private funds managed by the concessionaire, which in this case is ASODEMAC. This future hub is projected to be ready in a period of 3 to 5 years and the initial phase will be the construction of an access road and the filling in the body water. Once this stage will be ready, the infrastructure works on land and water would begin.

The area allocated is approximately 25 hectares, where 299 berths will be arranged on docks that can accommodate vessels between 12 and 40 metres in length, there will be administrative offices of the concessionaire and the Government, a boat storage with the respective beaching and launching facilities, maintenance warehouse, fuel storage and distribution dock, an ice factory, commercial areas and parking spaces.

The Minister of Tourism, William Rodriguez said he is pleased with the significant progress of the project declaring that with the advent of this new marina in Playas del Coco, maritime tourism will be strengthened, increasing the attraction of boat owners, travellers from all over the world, and allowing space for expedition cruises that will be able to take advantage of this infrastructure generating new employment opportunities and linkages in the province of Guanacaste and surrounding areas.

The Director of CIMAT, Luis Lemus, stated that this is a historic milestone for this community, the signing of this contract is not just another bureaucratic procedure, it is the realization of a shared dream and the beginning of a new chapter for El Coco, where a group of visionaries dared to dream of a marina for this centre. This marina is not only an infrastructe work, but it is a symbol of commitment to progress and sustainable development and it will boost the Costa Rican economy.

The President of ASADEMAC, Rafael Villegas, highlighted the support of the municipality and the resilience and strength of the members of the association to achieve this dream that has been sought for more than 24 years, expressing his enthusiasm to see a marina in Playas del Coco with a Port Captaincy and representation of Customs and Immigration. This maritime and tourism hub will be the main port of the North Pacific while the beach remains for the enjoyment of tourists and inabithants of El Coco and an ordering concerning improvement of the area will be carried out.

France | New Aviation Eco Tax Will Increase on 1st March 2025

France's new aviation Eco Tax will increase on 1st March 2025, the new tax, called TSBA, "Taxe sur les billets d' avion", will apply to all tickets purchased after that date.

The French authorities managed this operation doubling the amount of this so called “Eco Tax”,  or Solidarity Tax” which is charged on flights departing from France from March, forenseen in the 2025 budget in order to help the country deficit although it is being strongly criticised by airlines which estimate that the measure will have a negative impact and an example linked to that is the position of Air France - KLM and Ryanair which have even warned to withdraw their flights from French Airports.

The Eco Tax on an economy class short - haul within France and Europe will increase from €2.63 to €7.40 departing from France, the charge for an economy class medium - haul flight will rise €15.0 and for long distance more than 5.500 kilometres it will go from €15.0 to €40.0.

In addition to economy class, the French authorities planned increments for Business Class passengers, increasing their prices by €30.0 for short - haul flights, as well as €80.0 for medium - haul flights and €120.0 for long - haul flights.

Also private jets are subject to an increase in the eco tax, with fares expected to increase between €220.0 to €2.100.

The French Minister of Public Accounts, Amélie de Montchalin said that this increase it is a measure of fiscal and ecological justice, the richest 20% of the population accounts for more than half of the money on air travel.

The CEO of Air – France – KLM Benjamin Smith, has reported that tax increase is irresponsible and France is the country where air transport is most taxed in Europe, in the last 20 years, the company has lost between 1% and 2% of the market every year to international airlines and there is a risk of transferring the profit generated by Air - France - KLM travel to other countries.

Also Ryanair, famous Irish ultra low – cost group has criticised the French government's decision and the CEO of the company, Michael O' Leary has threatened to withdraw Ryanair's flights from French territory if the tax increase goes ahead commenting that France is already a high - tax country and if it rises its already high taxed further, the company will probably reduce its capacity.
