The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal consisting in an archipelago in the mid - Atlantic composed of nine stunning volcanic islands in the Macaronesia region highlighted by dramatic landscapes, suggestive fishing villages and green pastures, closed a golden year of tourism is experiencing a truly sustainable growth, great engine of the local economy as affirmed the Regional Secretary of Tourism, Bertha Cabral.
In 2024, the Portuguese archipelago recorded more than 4.2 million overnight stays which represented 27.6% more than the data for 2022, achieving more than €187.0 million in revenue from the hotel industry, 46% higher than the data for 2022, undoubtedly a great performance for this autonomous region of Portugal.
The Secretary of Tourism confirmed this data highlighting that tourism in the Azores is experiencing a relevant sustainable process and it is an important driver of the economy in the region and the main activity that create employment, wealth, investments and opportunities for the future of the Azorean islands.
With safe and decisive steps it was possible to build a path that allows the tourism sector to represent today around 20% of Gross Value Added, 17% of GDP and 17% of regional employment staying on the right track with the right policies.
