Finnish energy company Helen, headquartered in central Helsinki announced the closure of its last operational coal - fired power plant, signaling a a significant achievement in the country’s commitment to renewable energy and carbon reduction, a move that has been described by the company as “the end of the era of coal” in Finland.

The Salmisaari power plant, has historically been a relevant key provider of heat and electricity in the Finnish city, however its operations also resulted in significant carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to climate change.

The  plant ceased operations on 1st April 2025, ending more than a century of coal use in the Finnish capital and the closure Helen Company estimates that uts yearly CO2 emissions will decrease by 50% compared to 2024 and significantly lowering city’s emission by 30%.

As a result of closing the coal plant, Helen’ s emission in 2025 are projected to be just 20% of what they were in 1990 and in a addition this move also signifies the near complete end of coal - burning for energy in the Nordic country.

The CEO of energy company Helen Olli Sirkka said that this decision marks progress toward cleaner, more self – sufficient energy production, stating that giving up coal is a concrete step forwards Helen’s clean, self - sufficient and affordable energy production.

In 2022 coal accounted for 64% of the company’s district heating production, all of which was transported by ships to Helsinki.

Finland is transitioning to a fossile - free future by phasing out coal in energy production, with the Salmissari cool plant closure and a complete ban on coal use by 1st May 2029, as part of a broader national strategy.

The closure of Finland’s Salmisaari coal power plant, while some companies still use small amount of coal, is a significant step towards Finland’s goal of combating climate change and transitioning to sustainable energy, with the country aiming for carbon neutrality by 2035.

This transition aligns with global trends, toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels, reinforcing Finland’s position as a leader in environmental sustainability in the Nordic region and in Europe.

The bridge crosses the Beipan River and it passes through the deep Huajing Canyon, upon completion it will be the world's highest bridge measuring 625 metres from the bridge deck to the bottom of the gorge and it will surpass the current highest bridge, the Duge Bridge, which cross the same river 200 kilometres upstream.

In addition according to the Metro, plans for living areas, a glass walkway and the "highest bungee jump" in the world have also been unveiled by planners.

Among the reasons for the construction of the bridge were the revitalization of a very rural region with a lack of infrastructures providing vital transportation links in this area and the promotion of tourism, with also the projected creation of a centre for the extreme sports at the bottom of the canyon.

Chinese politician Zhang Shenglin said that this super project spanning the "Earth crack" will showcase China's engineering capabilities and boost Guizhou's goal of becoming a world - class tourist destination.

Chief Engineer Li Zhao stated that witnessing my work become something tangible, watching the brisge grow day by day and finally stand tall above the canyon, gives me a profoynd sense of achievement and pride.
