The United States | Visiting the U.S. Will Soon Require a $250 Visa Integrity Fee

Visiting the United States will soon require a $250 visa integrity fee, a move will take effect by 1st October 2025, consisting in a tax added to existing visa application costs, according to a provision in the Administration's One Big Beautiful Bill recently enacted and signed into law on 4th July 2025 applies to tourist, business travellers, students and workers entering the U.S.

The operations will be managed jointly by the DHS, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State.

According to DHS, the policy aims to reduce visa overstays, a long standing issue in U.S. immigration enforcement. Hundreds of thousands of travellers each year remain in the country beyond their authorized perriod of stay, according to government data and by requiring a financial incentive for departure or status compliance and the American Government hopes to deter such violations.

This new charge will be added to the existing visa application fees, including the MRV, Machine Readable Visa fee, reciprocity fees, and anti – fraud charges, meaning that a single tourist visa application may now costs several hundred dollars or more.

The fee applies to almost all nonimmigrant visa categories as :

•    Tourist and business – B1 - B2
•    Student – F/M
•    Work – H - 1B /H-4
•    Exchange visas – J

Applicants from non-waiver countries such as Brazil, China, India and Nigeria will have to pay the visa integrity fee of $250 in addition to their other requires fees.#

Most tourists coming from Africa, Latin and South American countries, as well as select countries in Asia and the Middle East, will also be subject to new $250 levy.

Visitors from Visa Waiver Program countries, such as Australia, Brunei, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the UK will not be affected and most Canadians and Bermudians will also be exempt from paying the fee.

Diplomats in parts of the Middle East, as well as official visa holders, may qualify for special waivers.

Critics argue that the fee is misguided and counterproductive. President and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, Geoff Freeman, has warned that the charge acts like a "self - imposed tariff" on international travellers, noting that it could discourage legitimate visitors, including students and tourists, from choosing the U.S. as a destination, as other countries compete for global travellers and aim to offer more friendly and affordable systems.

Jamaica | Experiencing its Tourism Growth from an Emerging Market : Latin America

Jamaica, island state of the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, a very popular destination, always able attracting a multitude of travellers for its vibrant culture, spectacular reef - lined beaches, a warm tropical climate, stunning natural landscapes in its interior higlighted by beautiful rainforests, mountains and waterfalls in its interior, luxury hotels and resorts, its iconic reggae music characterized by its distinctive syncopated rhythms allowing for deep musical expressions  with a strong emphasis on  the offbeat,  creating a characteristic "skank feel" and a unique culinary offering is experiencing its tourism growth from an emerging market : Latin America.

The Caribbean island is speaking a new tourism language this summer, one with deeper roots in Spanish and Portuguese, as planes touch down from Lima, Panama City, and Quito, a quiet transformation is taking shape : Latin America is no longer a distant market, it's a direct connection.

The focus on South and Latin America is part of a broader strategy to diversify Jamaica's tourism market beyond traditional source markets and the goal is to attract more visitors from this regions, boosting economic activity and creating opportunities for local communities.

For many years, Jamaica has drawn million of tourists from the United States, Canada and Europe,  traditional source markets but this season marks a breatkthrough, an unprecedent expansion of airlift from across Latin America, bringing thousands of new travellers to the island each month and reshaping the rhythm of its visitor economy.

Jamaica's Ministry of Tourism is fostering partnerships and implementing marketing campaigns to attract visitors from Latin America which is expected to translate into more spending in local shops, restaurants, and accommodations, benefiting Jamaican communities and small businesses.

The country is actively pursuing this emerging market, increasing connectivity and aiming for a diversification in its tourism industry.

Copa Airlines and LATAM Airlines are playing a crucial role as excellent partners by increasing flights and routes from key Latin and South American cities to the Caribbean island, flying more than 10.000 seats a month into Jamaica, making it more accessible to travellers, and behind each arrival is a larger story, one about strategy, resilience, and the evolution of a global destination.

Copa Airlines now flies seven times a week into Montego Bay, and five times a week into the capital of the country Kingston.

LATAM Airlines continues its direct service between the Peruviam capital, Lima and Jamaica, making it easier than ever for South American travellers to skip the U.S. layover and touch downs directly on Caribbean shores.

And it's not just scheduled routes, because more than 1,000 visitors are expected to arrive on summer charters from Ecuador. Ecuadorian charter flights are landing with full cabins, and this is part of a growing wave of regional travel, that's reshaping the way Jamaica connects with the world.

This growth comes as Jamaica has been struggling so far this year with a decline from the U.S . market and the Minister of State in Jamaica's Ministry of Tourism, Delano Seiveright said that Jamaica's source markets remain invaluable, but it's important to recognize that resilience in tourism requires diversification.

The new strategy isn't just about arrivals, it's about impact. Every plane full of new visitors drives spending at local restaurants, fills boutique hotels, supports family - owned shuttle companies, and the selling of handcrafted souvenirs in roadside stalls.

Government officials hint at further expansion into Asia - Pacific and the Middle East, but for now, Latin America is the front line, and the numbers are climbing.

Every week, numerous travellers are landing not just to sunbathe, but to connect with Jamaica's music, food and soul and more importantly, they are arriving with a fresh perspective; that Jamaica isn't just a destination, it's a sunny and welcoming crossroads on the unforgettable shores of the Caribbean.

Germany | Planning to Reduce its Aviation Tax

Germany is planning to reduce its aviation tax, including the "eco - tax"introduced to curb air travel and reduce emission., a move that is part of a broader effort to make air travel more affordable and to address the competitiveness of German airports, particularly in light of the EU’s environmental targets.

The country's aviation tax, aimed at reducing carbon emission, has been a point of contention for airlines, who argue it makes them less competitive compared to other European countries.

The ecological aviation tax in Germany was introduced in 2011 but it was not until 2024 and significantly raised the levy on both short - haul and long - haul flights.

The coalition of the CDU , the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, a democratic and conservative partywhich supports a free - market economy and social welfare programs while maintaining conservative stances on social issues with the SPD, the Social Democratic Party of Germany, which advocates the modernization of the economy to meet the demands of globalization which wants a strong welfare state dedicated to social justice now governs and they signal a shift towards policies that favour business and tourism.

In the coalition agreement between CDU and SPD, was already agreed to reduce air specific taxes, charges and to withdraw the increase in the aviation tax.

The Government's Tourism Coordinator, Christoph Ploss, told newspaper Bild that the high taxes were hurting German airports. The increase in the aviation tax must be reversed, and the charges at German airports must also be reduced, otherwise, there will soon be fewer flights connections at German airports than is currently the case.

The Tourism Coordinator added that the high taxes on aviation made it seem that holidays were more expensive for millions of Germans. The well deserved Mallorca holiday must not become affordable and Germany needs strong airlines, efficient airports and a competitive aviation industry.

The tax on a pan ticket rose from €12.48 to  €15.53 for short - haul flights, medium - haul - routes went from €31.61 to €39.34 and long - haul routes from €56.91 to €70.83.

Airlines have long complained that the charges in Germany were among the highest in Europe, harming competitiveness, and some companies such as Eurowings and Ryanair, warned that they would cut routes to and from Germany over what they labelled excessive taxation.

BTW the Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry told news agency AFP that the taxes needed to be lowered promptly adding that unlike the majority of its European neighbours, Germany was still well below the pre - Corona level as an aviation location.

At the same time, airports and airlines are struggling under an above - average burden of fees and charges compared to the rest of Europe, with far - reaching consequences for the tourism value chain.

In its “Fit for 55” package, the EU proposed introducing a kerosene tax to combat emissions and many countries followed suit.

France was said to be planning a threefold increase of its tax on intra - European air travel, from €2.63 to €7.30 while Belgium proposed raising passenger levies by up to 150% to around €5 per passenger and Denmark also introduced a hefty tax.

Only Sweden went against the grain and the Swedish Parliament has decided to abolish the act on tax on air travel on 1st July 2025.

Sri Lanka | implemented a Policy Change in the Hospitality Sector Allowing Women to Work Night shifts.

Sri Lanka implemented a policy change in the hospitality sector allowing women to work night shifts. The South Asian country lifted a longstanding 1954 regulation that prevented women from working in hotels and restaurants after 22.00 causing operational difficulties since food service was limited to that time and now this move marks a major step toward gender equality and workforce growth of the tourism industry.

This change welcomed by the country's hospitality industry and notably, the previous rule did not apply to other female workers in the sector.

Hospitality ndustry leaders and proponents of gender equality in Sri Lanka are lauding the decision as a critical step towards inclusivity, operational effectiveness, and economic expansion.

At the weekly post - Cabinet meeting media briefing Cabinet spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jaytissa said that it is understood that this legislation is very old and the economic opportunities have changed since 1954 with the expansion of new industries. Thus, this revision was considered following stakeholder lobbying to amend the law.

With this new policy under previous regulations, female employees over 18 can work as hotel receptionists, coat room attendants, garments rooms, and washrooms between 18.00 and 06.00.

A well-known hotelier and owner of Thema Collection, Chandra Wickremesinghe, that recently opened the first all - women operated hotel in Sri Lanka, called the move a good step, saying that "if nurses can do night worl, why can't female hotel employees ?" considering that the old law was absurd.

Thema Collection owner also noted that the change could encourage more women to join the hospitality workforce, which currently represents only 10% of employees and he stressed that hoteliers need to provide accommodation and support facilities for female staff working late hours.

The Resident Manager of Mahaweli Reach Hotels, Rodney Armstrong, called the change a huge plus point and said offering accommodation and transport would encourage more women to join the worforce.

President of the Hotels Association of Sri Lanka, M. Shanthikumar, also praised the move and emphasised the importance of providing safe transport or accommodation for employees finishing work at midnight.

Sri Lanka's tourism industry is growing steadily, targeting 2.5 million visitors in 2025, up from 2.0 million in 2024. The main source markets last year were India, Russia, the UK, Germany and China.

The tourism sector in Sri Lanka is experiencing a strong rebound this year with a positive outlook for the rest of 2025, promotional campaigns to attract visitors from key source markets,  improved connectivity and streamlined visa processes are contributing to the the positive growth.

PHOA, the Philippines Hotel Owners Association founded in 1977, the foremost organization of hotel owners in the country headquartered in Makati City is developing a manpower roadmap to address labour shortage.

The Association is planning to identify the workforce needs of the expanding hospitality sector and address potential labour shortages caused by the migration of many qualified workers and graduates abroad, an initiative, the first of its kind for the hospitality industry in the country.

At the media launch of Philippines Hotel Connect 2025, the country' largest gathering of hotel owners, investors and developers, will take place on July 24 and 25 the PHOA Executive Director Benito Bengzon Jr, said that this initiative aims to ensure that hotels have qualified manpower to recruit from.

According to PHOA's Philippines Accommodation Pipeline Report 2024, more than 55.000 direct jobs will be required to support 158 accommodations projects that are either in the pipeline or under development over the next few years in the country.

The Executive Director stated that there is a problem with job mismatch, the continuing problems about the Philippines tourism and hospitality students getting jobs on cruise ships, and about the difficulty of getting baristas, front office desk clerks and other positions in the sector.

The industry's human capital development plan must be forward - looking, the human capital development plan for the industry is aspirational and the narrative has to change.

Many Filipinos will still want to continue to aspire for overseas jobs and therefore the country can not be using the competition posed by overseas employment as the perpetual reason for not having enough people to work in the Philippines.

A human capital development plan will allow the industry to ensure that all hotels opening in the next five to 10 years will have a qualified pool of manpower to recruit from.

PHOA's Executive Director added that the roadmap is going to be a game changer because once you have the document, you will be able to see a clearer picture of the future and it will be good not only for hotel owners but also for current workers, the student and the parents.

Intiwatana or Intihuatana, known as “the hitching post of the sun”, a carved rock pillar whose four corners are oriented towards the four cardinal points, part of the archaeological and historic site of Machu Picchu, iconic Incan citadel set high in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes Mountains of southern Peru, often referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas” located in the Machu Picchu district within the Urubamba Province above the Sacred Valley where flows the Urubamba River, built in the 15th century, declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1982 and a UNESCO World Site in 1983 is experincing conservation works to preserve its integrity.

The Ministry of Culture, through the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, informed that on July 8 and 9, a specialized preventive conservation team started operations of presevation in three sections of support walls located on the platforms on the eastern side of the Intiwatana hill, in the "llaqta" of Machu Picchu.

These actions aim to prevent and address signs of loss of structural stability in the aforementioned platforms, which do not correspond to original structures, since they were rebuilt between 1940 and 1948.

This intervention is part of ongoing efforts to preserve the historic site and is based on the results of continuous geodynamic monitoring that has been carried out since 2015, which identified a slight detachement of the rocky outcrop adjacent to these restored segments.

It should be noted that this monitoring was reinforced with the execution of specialized studies in geology throughout the Intiwatana hill.

In order to facilitate prevention work, a section of the road adjacent to the platforms, which is part of the circuit 2, has been diverted so as not to alter the normal movement of visitors towards the “Roca Sagrada”, the Sacred Rock, sector.

For this temporary detour, a section of the path has been intervened, installing two temporary wooden stairs, as well as geoblock grids on the agricultural soil of the main square, thus allowing a safe and orderly transit of visitors.

The Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco calls on the public to take cognizance of the preventive conservation work of the Intiwatana hill of Machu Picchu, which has the technical support of the competent instance of the Ministry of Culture and It should be noted that the visit of the National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu will take place with absolute normality.

The archaeological site of Intiwatana is famous for an emblematic ritual stone associated with the astronomic clock or calendar of the Inca civilization, possibly used as a sundial that was aligned with the sun’s position during the winter solstice and ther Inca believed the stone held the sun in its place along its annual path in the sky.

The Intihuatana or Intiwatana of Machu Picchu was carved directly into the bedrock of the mountain’s summit area and it is characterized by complex surfaces, planes and angles whose purpose at this time is unknown and featuring a slightly inclined plane at its top, an upright tilts 13 degrees northward.

Macau, China | Anticipating a Robust Summer Season, August to peak with 85% Hotel Occupancy

Macau's tourism industry is anticipating a robust summer season, with the Hotel and Tourism Industry Association projecting an increase in visitor arrivals compared to last year and August to peak with 85% hotel occupany.

Visitor arrival rate in July has already reached an average of over 90.000 per day, suprassing June's numbers and signaling a very positive trend.

The contributing factors linked to this success are undoubtedly flexible visa policies from mainland China that are likely a key driver of this growth, making it easier for travellers to enter Macau.

The peak period is anticipated in August, with summer hotel occupancy rates averaging around 85% and reaching up to 90% during peak times.

The President of Macau Hoteliers & Innkeepers Association, Cheung Kin Chung, told public broadcaster TDM that the first half of 2025 has shown positive recovery momentum in the tourism market, with continued growth expected in the second half of the year.

This optimistic outlook comes as visitor arrivals to Macau continue climbing and hotel supply and demand remain in good balance confirming a very strong recovery of the sector.

The autonomous region on the south coast of China surpassed 20 million arrivals in 2025, achieving the milestone 26 days earlier than in 2024, data also confirmed by the Public Security Police Force.

Mainland Chinese tourists accounted for the largest share at 71.6%, followed by visitors from Hong Kong at 19.1%, Taiwan a 2.4% and other international markets at 6.9%.

Official statistics show that hotel room occupancy rates in the first five months of 2025 increased by five percentage points year - on - year to 89.2%. However, the number of guests decreased by 2.1% to 6 million, while the average length of stay remained at 1.7 nights.

The President of Macau Hoteliers & Innkeepers Association acknowledged that external economic conditions, changing tourist consumption patterns and intensified competition from neigboring regions present greater challenges for Macau, and the industry must continue strengthening internal capabilities while expanding customer sources.

For the summer season, the tourism industry of Macau will focus on developing family - friendly and educational tourism products that offer deeper cultural experiences.

The rest of the year will prioritize optimizing tourism product offerings, strengthening regional cooperation, enhancing "tourism plus" integrated development, improving tourism infrastructure, and conducting targeted international market expansion.

The MGTO, the Macau Government Tourism Office projected at the beginning of the year that annual visitor arrivals in 2025 would reach between 38 and 39 million and with the brilliant performances in the seven months of this year, the aspiration to reach this ambitious goal could turn into reality.
